With the 49ers losing the Super Bowl to the Chiefs, and having taken some time to not necessarily get over it, but get passed it, it’s time for my early look at the 49ers 2024 salary cap situation.

Right now, the 49ers have 57 players signed for 2024 after signing a bunch of players to reserve/future deals, with them accounting for $294,906,903, along with $7,681,613 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $302,588,516.

Since the top 51 rule will become into effect, and with the salary cap projected to be around $242.5 million, including players’ base salaries escalating, and new LTBE incentives counting, I have the 49ers $14,843,234 over their projected adjusted cap, which would be $282,855,281, which includes a $242.5 million base cap, plus $36,395,265 in carryover, and as of now a projected $3,960,016 in adjustments.

Now, the 49ers will need to create salary cap room in order to be able to sign any free agents, and their draft class, with the options below.

RB Christian McCaffrey – $8,472,000 (Restructure)

WR Deebo Samuel – $15,877,600 (Restructure)

TE George Kittle – $9,752,000 (Restructure)

LT Trent Williams – $15,072,000 (Restructure)

DT Arik Armstead – $12,960,000 (Extension or Restructure)

MLB Fred Warner – $11,340,000 (Restructure)

WLB Dre Greenlaw – $5,580,000 (Extension or Restructure)

CB Charvarius Ward – $9,148,000 (Extension or Restructure)

The 49ers will most likely restructure Deebo Samuel’s deal, which saves the team $15,877,600, plus some other deals, most likely Trent Williams if they want to make a splash move, if not, then I’d expect them to restructure Fred Warner’s deal to save the $11.34 million.

Now, the 49ers could save a ton of cap room by extending the likes of defensive tackle Arik Armstead, weakside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, and cornerback Charvarius Ward, which combines for $27.668 million, but with Greenlaw’s achilles injury, it’s unlikely the team extends him until they see him back in action, at least practicing.

I wouldn’t expect the 49ers to make a huge splash in free agency, something more along the lines of a Charvarius Ward level player, someone up-and-coming, & also younger.

We should find out more over the next few weeks as to what the 49ers official adjusted salary cap will be, but the last matter of business is the 49ers extending wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Now, as for my thoughts on the 49ers season, I’m feeling dejected, as I felt this was the 49ers year, but it didn’t happen, hopefully the 49ers can come back stronger, draft better, cause the 2023 class wasn’t exciting, mainly because the team lacked a 1st or 2nd round pick.

When it comes to the Super Bowl, I feel what was the downfall was the Dre Greenlaw injury, which allowed the Chiefs to exploit Oren Burks, who is a good linebacker, but not at the quality of Greenlaw, or former 49er Azeez Al-Shaair.

I feel like the team made the right move to fire defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, as the defense was horrible down the stretch, the offense had to carry them in most game, I thought the defense was a top defense the first 5 games, but they got exposed in weeks 6-8, which was the beginning of the downfall, plus not being able to stop the run, they did make some good adjustments in the Super Bowl, but not enough for Wilks to keep his job.

With that said, thank you for reading, and follow me on X/Twitter @49erscap.
