Next up today we continue our 9-part series of looking at how much each position group will count against the 49ers 2021 cap, and today we have the Tight Ends.
The 49ers have just 5 signed for 2021, with them set to count $9,510,718 against the 2021 cap.
First up is the people tight end, and in my opinion, the best all around tight end in the NFL, George Kittle, who is set to count $5,447,059 against the 2021 cap.
Kittle signed the massive 5-year extension last offseason worth $15 million a year, making him the highest paid tight end in the NFL.
Kittle is coming off a season where he had some injury issues, and the 49ers opted not to play him in the later part of the season, despite Kittle feeling he was ready to play.
I expect Kittle to get back to having a 1000 yards receiving, while also running over defenders, and blocking defenders, shoving them to ground, like only Kittle can.
Next we have Ross Dwelley, who is set to count $1,588,235 against the 2021 cap, and the 49ers liked him so much that they guaranteed his entire base salary, so he’s a lock to make the 53.
Dwelley has looked good when filling in for Kittle, scoring touchdowns, and looking like a very good pass catcher, and a good blocker.
Next up is the newest 49ers tight end, MyCole Pruitt, who the 49ers signed a few weeks back, and he’s set to count $987,500 against the 2021 cap, with the 49ers guaranteeing $500,000 of his base salary, so it looks like he’s going to be a 49ers unless something terrible happens.
Pruitt is a very good blocker, but he is also a good pass catcher, as he showed it while with the Tennessee Titans, so the 49ers are probably hoping that he can help in both the passing game, and running game as a blocker.
Now we have Charlie Woerner, who is set to count $825,258 against the 2021 cap.
Now Woerner prides himself on being a great blocking tight end, but in 2020 he struggled, I don’t know if it’s due to bad play, or the fact that 2020 had no offseason programs, workouts, minicamps, and a preseason.
If Woerner can show the 49ers what they saw in him when they drafted him, then I envision the 49ers keeping all 4 tight ends on the 53.
Lastly is Josh Pederson, the son of former Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson, who signed as a UDFA, he is set to count $662,666 against the cap in 2021, but he’s more than likely heading to the teams practice squad.
So with all of this said, I thank everyone for reading article, as always you can follow me on Twitter @49erscap, or leave a comment below, and I’ll get back to you.
