Earlier today Pat McAfee had NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on The Pat McAfee Show, and they discussed several topics, but the one that stands out is Rapoport saying that the 49ers keeping Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t impossible, so I’m going to show how the 49ers can keep Garoppolo at his current salary.

Right now, Garoppolo is set to count $26.95 million against the 2022 salary cap, and of course, if the 49ers move on from him when he’s healthy, they’ll save $25.55 million, which is a great amount of cap room that they can carryover into 2023.

Now, the 49ers don’t need to unload Garoppolo & his contract to extend star wide receiver Deebo Samuel, & defensive end Nick Bosa, as I’ve outline many times this offseason on how the 49ers can extend both Deebo, & Bosa, while keeping their cap hits either the same, or a little bit more, so that’s not really an issue.

Now, when it comes to the 49ers keeping Garoppolo at his current salary, they can do that, and let’s look at my latest projected roster, with draft picks that I posted this past Saturday.

I had the following roster.

OFFENSE:

QB(2): 5 Trey Lance(2024), & 7 Nate Sudfeld(2022)
RB(4): 25 Elijah Mitchell(2024), 22 Jeff Wilson Jr.(2022), 28 Trey Sermon(2024), & — Pierre Strong Jr.(2025)
FB(1): 44 Kyle Juszczyk(2025)
WR(6): 19 Deebo Samuel(2022), 11 Brandon Aiyuk(2023), 15 Jauan Jennings(2022), 14 Ray-Ray McCloud(2023), — Marcus Johnson(2022), & — Malik Turner(2022)
TE(3): 85 George Kittle(2025), 89 Charlie Woerner(2023), & 82 Ross Dwelley(2022)
C(2): 50 Alex Mack(2023), & — Dohnovan West(2025)
LG(2): 65 Aaron Banks(2024), & 68 Colton McKivitz(2022)
RG(2): 60 Daniel Brunskill(2022), & — Dylan Parham(2025)
LT(2): 71 Trent Williams(2026), & 76 Jaylon Moore(2024)
RT(1): 69 Mike McGlinchey(2022)

DEFENSE:

DE(6): 97 Nick Bosa(2022), 56 Samson Ebukam(2022), 92 Charles Omenihu(2022), 94 Jordan Willis(2022), — Kerry Hyder Jr.(2022), & — Kemoko Turay(2022)

NT(2): 99 Javon Kinlaw(2023), & — Hassan Ridgeway(2022)
WLB(1): 57 Dre Greenlaw(2022)
MLB(2): 54 Fred Warner(2026), & — Oren Burks(2023)
SLB(1): 51 Azeez Al-Shaair(2022)
CB(6): 35 Charvarius Ward(2024), 20 Ambry Thomas(2024), 4 Emmanuel Moseley(2022), 38 Deommodore Lenoir(2024), 27 Dontae Johnson(2022), & — Mykael Wright(2025)
FS(2): 1 Jimmie Ward(2022), & 33 Tarvarius Moore(2022)
SS(3): 29 Talanoa Hufanga(2024), 30 George Odum(2024), & — Nick Cross(2025)

SPECIAL TEAMS:

PK(1): 9 Robbie Gould(2022)
P(1): 18 Mitch Wishnowsky(2022)
LS(1): 46 Taybor Pepper(2022)

PRACTICE SQUAD:

RB 23 JaMycal Hasty
FB 40 Josh Hokit
WR – Tre Turner
WR – KeeSean Johnson
TE 88 Jordan Matthews*
TE – Daniel Bellinger
C 64 Jake Brendel*
OT – Andrew Stueber
RT 67 Justin Skule*
DE – Amare Barno
DT 96 Maurice Hurst Jr.*
NT 78 Chris Slayton
WLB 59 Curtis Robinson
SLB 45 Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
CB 43 Darqueze Dennard*

The 53-man roster, & practice squad would add up to $179,366,161 in cap commitments, along with $12,751,505 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $192,117,666, leaving the 49ers $21,256,495 under their 2022 adjusted cap, so, if the 49ers kept Garoppolo, they’d likely release a vested veteran, and put him on the teams’ practice squad.

If the 49ers kept Garoppolo with the above roster, they’d need to create $4,293,505 in cap room, so what they can do to create the needed cap room is, restructure both left tackle Trent Williams($4.904 million saved), & middle linebacker Fred Warner($1,223,200 saved), for a combined savings of $6,127,200, leaving the team $1,833,695 under their 2022 adjusted cap.

To create more cap room, the 49ers could alter or extend other deals, like defensive end Samson Ebukam($3.892 million saved with a restructure or extension, $6.4 million if cut, or $4.865 million with a pay cut), cornerback Emmanuel Moseley($2.692 million saved with a restructure or extension), and free safety Jimmie Ward($6.224 million saved with a restructure or extension).

So, is it possible? Yes, is it likely? probably not, especially when they gave Nate Sudfeld $2 million fully guaranteed to be the teams’ #2 quarterback.

But this is how the 49ers can keep Garoppolo, and potentially trade him in-season, of course, the more ideal scenario is to cut/trade him after he’s 100% healthy this offseason, which will be in June-July area.
