Rookie Class Review
1st Pick – Round 2, Pick 61
Position: Offensive Guard
Name: Dylan Parham
School: Memphis
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 311
Hands: 10 1/4″
Arms: 33 1/8″
40: 4.93

Draft Analysis
Parham is an athletic mauler on the interior who holds his own in pass protection, exactly what the 9ers need on the right side with the instability Brunskill has shown over the years. Parham is a 4 year starter who has excellent awareness for the position and knowledge of his assignment, not going to be a sexy pick but is a pick where it can unlock the 9ers running game and provide reliability in the pass game.

2nd Pick: Round 3 – Pick 93
Position: NB
Name: Mykael Wright
School: Oregon
Height: 5’10 1/2″
Weight: 173
Arms: 30 1/2″
Hands: 9″
40: 4.57

Although San Francisco picked up Charvarius Ward to solidify the outside, the Nickel position is still up in the air with K’Waun Williams gone to Denver. Wright is an explosive defender who thrives on taking away opposing teams best weapon, possessing great short area quickness and good length to make plays on bigger Receivers. Wright has played Inside and Outside during his career with the Ducks, showing his versatility and flexibility, Wright also is a return threat with the ball in his hands(taking 2 Kick Returns back for Touchdowns, averaging 26.54 Yards per return). Wright can slide into the NB position with K’Waun’s absence and become another shark for our secondary.

3rd Pick: Round 3 – Pick 105
Position: RB
Name: James Cook
School: Georgia
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 198
Arms: 30 3/4″
Hands: 9 3/8″
40: 4.42

Running Back is not a need for the 9ers, but at this point in the draft and the roster we have, you can take the best player available, Cook’s best attribute is his versatility, taking jet sweeps, showing best in Zone schemes, and a threat out of the backfield in the passing game. Cook will be a special teamer and the third option in the running game but would be a major upgrade over Hasty as a 3rd down option.

4th Pick: Round 4 – Pick 134
Position: OC
Name: Dohnovan West
School: Arizona St.
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 296
Arms: 33″
Hands: 9 1/2″
40: 5.27
Vertical: 31.5″
Broad Jump: 9’8″

West had a solid season at ASU, showing his athleticism and smarts leading the zone scheme rushing attach. Mack isn’t going to stick around too much longer and Brendal isn’t a viable option to replace Mack, investing in West will provide a capable back-up center potential replacement for Mack in 23′ if Mack doesn’t return.

5th Pick: Round 5 – Pick 172
Position: WR
Name: Justyn Ross
School: Clemson
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 205
Arms: 32 1/8″
Hands: 9 5/8″
Bench: 11
40: 4.65
Veritcal: 31.5″
Broad Jump: 9’8″

6th Pick: Round 6 – Pick 187
Position: DE
Name: Amare Barno
School: Virginia Tech
Height: 6’5
Weight: 246
Arms: 34″
Hands: 9″
40: 4.36

Barno is a freak athlete coming out of Virginia Tech, posting a ridiculous 4.36 40 at the NFL combine at 246 pounds, Barno is a developmental prospect who will need coaching to maximize his potential, also will need to at 10-15 pounds to hold up at the next level. Barno possess elite first step quickness and a great spin move to counter OT’s thinking he is only going to run around them. Working with Kocurek can unlock this immensely talented athlete to provide Lighten to Bosa’s Thunder in the near future.

7th Pick: Round 6 – Pick 220
Position: P
Name: Matt Araiza
School: San Diego St.
Height: 6’1
Weight: 200
Arms: 30 1/2″
Hands: 9″
40: 4.68

Special Teams was one of our worst units last season and Wishnowsky was a big reason, the 9ers have invested in special teams contributors like Odum and Burks – now it’s time to invest in a punter who can flip the field and be used as a weapon, not a liability. Araiza has elite strength and is also a Kickoff specialist allowing Gould to focus on placekicking and our defense to have better field position week in and week out.

8th Pick: Round 6 – Pick 221
Position: Safety
Name: Verone McKinley III
School: Oregon
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 198
Arms: 30 5/8″
Hands: 9 1/8″

McKinley had a breakout 2021 season with the Ducks, showing this ability to create turnovers with position flexibility and athleticism. McKinley I see as a practice squad player to start before becoming a core special teamer and potential 3rd safety.

9th Pick: Round 7 – Pick 262
Position: CB
Name: Joshua Williams
School: Fayetteville St.
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 195
Arms: 32 7/8″
Hands: 9 1/2″
40: 4.53

Williams is a long athletic CB prospect who I can see become a starter down the line on the outside, will be a practice team guy until he can prove his skills can match the NFL level coming from a small school, but Williams doesn’t lack size or talent. At 6’3, 195 pounds he provides immediate size and length the 9ers do not possess on the outside.

  1. I think Matt Araiza will be off the board by the end of the 4th round. The benefit of a punter that can flip the field from anywhere should be a valuable commodity in the draft. I would be stoked if the Niners took him with their 4th round pick if he’s still on the board.
