Recapping the 49ers 2023 offseason thus far

The 49ers have made a plethora of roster moves since the 2022 season ended, and I’m here to recap everything that’s happened.

Let’s begin with the teams re-signings.

The team brought back the following players, listed with their contract terms.

TE Ross Dwelley signed a 1-year deal, worth $1.7 million, with $700,000 fully guaranteed, but only $1.08 million counts against the salary cap, this is due in part to the contract being a Fourth Year Qualifying Contract, which allows the team to give the player a higher amount, up to $1.25 million more than their minimum base salary, and in return the team gets a lower cap hit.

C Jake Brendel re-sign with the 49ers on a 4-year deal, worth $16.5 million, with $7.49 million guaranteed, $4.49 million of it being fully guaranteed, but the deal is also worth up to $4.5 million a year, thanks in part to incentives.

RT Colton McKivitz re-signed with the 49ers on a 2-year deal, worth $4.56 million, with $1.87 million fully guaranteed, and it’s worth up to $5.8 million with incentives, this contract shows to me, that he’s going to get a chance to be the teams’ new RT, but at the worst he’s the teams’ Swing Tackle.

DT Kevin Givens re-signed with the 49ers on a 1-year deal, worth $2.1 million, with $2 million fully guaranteed, and another $100,000 in incentives, so he has a $2 million cap number, pretty good for a player who played well when Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw were hurt.

DT/NT T.Y. McGill Jr. signed a new 1-year deal, worth $1.165 million, with $400,000 fully guaranteed, but only $940,000 counts against the cap, as it qualifies as a veteran minimum salary benefit deal, which allows the player to earn the full amount, while the team gets some cap relief.

SLB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles signed a new 1-year deal, worth $1.885 million, with $1.25 million fully guaranteed, and another $500,000 that he can earn through incentives, so this tells me that Flannigan-Fowles is likely to be the teams new 3rd LB.

FS Tashaun Gipson Sr. signed a new 1-year deal, worth $2.9 million, with $2.17 million fully guaranteed, and it’s worth up to $3.2 million with incentives, and the team will have their starting safety tandem back for 2023.

LS Taybor Pepper re-signed with the 49ers on a 3-year deal, worth $3.96 million, with $1.5 million fully guaranteed, and this is a great signing, as Pepper is one of the best long snappers in the game, and a great all around person.

The team also tendered WR Jauan Jennings, an ERFA, on a 1-year, $940,000 deal, so the teams 3rd WR will be back this season.

Next up are the additions.

The team added QB Sam Darnold on a 1-year deal, worth a base value of $4.5 million, with $3.45 million fully guaranteed, and it’s worth up to $11.5 million with incentives, and $1.2 million of those incentives count against the 2023 salary cap.

The team also added veteran C/LG Jon Feliciano on a 1-year deal, worth a base value of $2.25 million, and max of $3.25 million with incentives, and $2.165 million of the deal is fully guaranteed.

The team added a pair of edge rushers, as DE Clelin Ferrell signed a 1-year deal, worth $2.5 million, with $1.82 million fully guaranteed, and they also signed DE Austin Bryant to a 1-year deal, worth $1.105 million, but do to the deal qualifying as a veteran minimum salary benefit deal, he only counts $965,000 against the cap.

The 49ers big free agent that they brought in was NT/DT Javon Hargrave, on a 4-year deal, worth $84 million, with $40 million fully guaranteed, and he should help provide interior pass rush that the 49ers have lacked since they traded away DeForest Buckner, so he’ll go nicely next to Nick Bosa, & Arik Armstead.

The team added a new slot cornerback in Isaiah Oliver, on a 2-year deal, worth $6.65 million, with $2.91 million fully guaranteed, another $1.25 million is injury guaranteed for 2024, and he should fill a huge void left with the departures of Jimmie Ward, & Emmanuel Moseley.

The team added versatile defensive back/special teamer Myles Hartsfield on a 1-year, non guaranteed $1.01 million deal, but I expect him to be one of the 53 players this coming September.

Finally, the team added place kicker Zane Gonzalez from the Carolina Panthers via trade, with the two teams swapping late round conditional draft picks in 2025.

That’s about it as to what the 49ers have added, and re-signed in free agency, but there’s still the draft to come, and the team has 11 draft picks, so expect them to move up, down, and all around to find the players they covet the most.

Finally, here’s a look at the teams’ 2023 salary cap situation as of now.

The 49ers have 64 players signed right now, with a projected $2,523,686 in cap room.
