With free agency now officially dying down, as the first wave of it has come, and gone, it’s time to take a look at the 49ers 2023 & 2024 salary cap situations.

Now, the 49ers have 2 big decisions left to make, besides the 2023 NFL Draft, as they will most definitely pickup Brandon Aiyuk’s 5th-year option, which will be worth $14.124 million in 2024, and Nick Bosa’s pending extension, which should lower his $17.859 million cap number some, depending on the signing bonus given to him.
I’d expect Nick Bosa’s 2024 cap number to come in somewhere around $12 million to $14 million, on a 5-year extension, worth $35 million a year, $110 million in guaranteed money, with $82 million of it being fully guaranteed.
So, If the 49ers need any extra cap room, they can restructure the following contracts.
RB Christian McCaffrey – $8.576 million max, $7,146,666 minimum
TE George Kittle – $8.456 million max, $7,927,500 minimum
LT Trent Williams – $14.588 million max, $13,676,250 minimum
DT Arik Armstead – $11.78 million max, $11,043,750 minimum
Now, the most likely restructure would be Arik Armstead’s, as the team definitely views Armstead as part of the teams core, and future, which would give the team enough cap room, as of now, to go into the 2023 season, while not having to worry too much about any emergencies, or in season roster moves.
Now let’s look towards the future, specifically 2024, where the 49ers, including their draft picks, along with Aiyuk’s 5th-year option, & a projected Bosa cap number of $14 million, they’d end up being $20,136,918 over a projected 2024 cap of $256 million, which means the team will need to restructure, or extend some of their key players.
Now, let’s take a look at the teams players signed for 2024, with draft picks, Aiyuk, & Bosa signed, with their cap number listed.
- WR 19 Deebo Samuel(2025)- $28,572,000

Now, the 49ers have 4 players who could or will earn an increase in their base salary, Aaron Banks, Elijah Mitchell, Deommodore Lenoir, & Talanoa Hufanga, which would see Banks, Mitchell, & Lenoir’s base salaries rise to a projected $3.124 million each, & Hufanga will have a new base salary of $4.901 million, thanks to him being named to last seasons’ Pro Bowl, which would put the team around $29,670,334 over a projected $256 million cap, but don’t worry, the team has ways of creating cap room.
Below are restructure and/or extension candidates, with how much the team can gain.
RB Christian McCaffrey – $8,472,000 (Restructure)
WR Deebo Samuel – $15,877,600 (Restructure)
TE George Kittle – $9,752,000 (Restructure)
LT Trent Williams – $15,072,000 (Restructure)
DT Arik Armstead – $12,960,000 (Extension or Restructure)
MLB Fred Warner – $11,340,000 (Restructure)
WLB Dre Greenlaw – $5,580,000 (Extension or Restructure)
CB Charvarius Ward – $9,148,000 (Extension or Restructure)
It’s not really known if they’d extend Armstead, Greenlaw, & Ward before the new league year begins, but that would save $27.688 million in cap room, and the reason I say why I don’t know if they’ll extend them before the new league year begins, is due to the fact that the team does extensions in late July, or early August, but they may have to change that philosophy if they want to get under the cap.
I do see Deebo Samuel’s contract being restructured, which saves the team $15,877,600, which would give the team $13,895,266 in cap room, that’s assuming they extend or restructure Arik Armstead, Dre Greenlaw, and Charvarius Ward’s contracts.
If they decide not to touch Armstead, Greenlaw, and Ward’s contracts, then they will need to restructure someone like George Kittle, who would save the team $9.752 million, and also Trent Williams, which would save the team $15.072 million, which would give the team then $11,031,266 in cap room to begin the new league year next March.
Of course, we have Brandon Aiyuk’s pending extension, and yes I say pending, because I don’t see the team moving him, or letting him walk, so the team will definitely, in my opinion, extend Aiyuk, likely not until July or August, but he’d have low 2024 & 2025 cap numbers, to help offset the restructures they will have to do.
But don’t be worried about 2024, the fact is that this is a projection right now, the cap should be at a minimum in the $256 million range, maybe higher, plus the players who could get increases in their base salaries could either not receive them due to playing time issues, or they could be extended, with Talanoa Hufanga also being a player the team will want to extend in 2024.
Well, there you have it, the 49ers 2023 & 2024 cap situations as it stands now, I know it doesn’t look great, but I assure everyone that their salary cap is healthy, and will be just fine, especially in 2024, and beyond.
With that said, thank you for reading, and follow me on Twitter @49erscap for more salary cap information, & tidbits.
