I recently went over this, but the reports out there are that the 49ers will restructure the contracts of defensive tackle Arik Armstead, middle linebacker Fred Warner, and cornerback Charvarius Ward, which saves the team $31.42 million in salary cap room, so let’s look at what the 49ers 2023 salary cap situation would look like, including potential RFA tenders.

First off, the 49ers have 49 players signed for 2023, with a projected $7,242,463 in cap room under their $237,520,268 adjusted cap, but that’s with only 49 players signed, so if they were to sign 2 more players making $750,000 minimum, they’d be at most $5,742,463 under that adjusted cap.

Now, those players will most likely be their RFAs, left tackle/right tackle Colton McKivitz, defensive tackle Kevin Givens, and strongside linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and they’d cost $2.743 million for McKivitz, and $2.627 million for Givens, & Flannigan-Fowles.

If we add in those 3 players, the 49ers would have 52 players signed/tendered, leaving them $245,463 under their adjusted cap, but this is before the likely restructures of Armstead, Warner, & Ward, which would give the team $31,235,463 in salary cap room to spend on free agents, and their draft class.

The 49ers would have the following 52 players signed/tendered for 2023, with their 2023 cap number.

  1. QB 5 Trey Lance(2024)- $9,301,434
  2. QB 13 Brock Purdy(2025)- $889,253

Of course, restructuring Armstead, Warner, & Ward would have consequences on the 2024 salary cap, as they would lose $7.81 million in 2024 salary cap space, but that really isn’t a worry, as players like defensive tackle Arik Armstead, weakside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, & cornerback Charvarius Ward will all be in their final year of their deals being in 2024.

And by extending the above they’d save $12.96 million for Armstead, $5.58 million for Greenlaw, and $9.148 million for Ward, which would be a total of $27.688 million, and they can also restructure wide receiver Deebo Samuel and save $15,877,600, for a total savings of $43,565,600.

Now, that doesn’t include wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s 5th-year option, or defensive end Nick Bosa’s pending extension, which would be worth $14.124 million for Aiyuk, and I estimate around $12 million to $14 million cap number for Bosa in 2024, leaving the 49ers with $15,441,600 in extra cap space, on top of $14,863,379 that they’d have by just restructuring Arik Armstead, Fred Warner, & Charvarius Ward this offseason, giving them over $30.304 million in salary cap room, with 30 players signed, and $13,609,979 with 51 players signed, but this also doesn’t include any 2023 free agent signings, or draft picks for 2023 & 2024.

The 49ers would have the following 30 players signed for 2024, with their 2024 cap number listed, including the reported potential 3 restructures, but not any 2024 restructures, or extensions.

  1. DT 91 Arik Armstead(2024)- $28,811,000
  2. WR 19 Deebo Samuel(2025)- $28,572,000
  3. LT 71 Trent Williams(2026)- $28,009,777
  4. MLB 54 Fred Warner(2026)- $24,469,000
  5. TE 85 George Kittle(2025)- $19,842,575
  6. CB 7 Charvarius Ward(2024)- $17,901,000
  7. WR 11 Brandon Aiyuk(2024)- $14,124,000
  8. DE 97 Nick Bosa(2028)- $14,000,000 (projection)
  9. RB 23 Christian McCaffrey(2025)- $12,000,000
  10. QB 5 Trey Lance(2024)- $10,851,673
  11. WLB 57 Dre Greenlaw(2024)- $9,632,382
  12. FB 44 Kyle Juszczyk(2025)- $7,588,750
  13. P 18 Mitch Wishnowsky(2026)- $2,825,000
  14. LG 65 Aaron Banks(2024)- $2,250,694
  15. SS 30 George Odum(2024)- $1,625,000
  16. DE 95 Drake Jackson(2025)- $1,590,561
  17. CB 20 Ambry Thomas(2024)- $1,425,154
  18. RB 32 Tyrion Davis-Price(2025)- $1,393,240
  19. WR 6 Danny Gray(2025)- $1,375,883
  20. LS 46 Taybor Pepper(2025)- $1,300,000
  21. RG 74 Spencer Burford(2025)- $1,153,014
  22. RT 76 Jaylon Moore(2024)- $1,135,759
  23. CB 38 Deommodore Lenoir(2024)- $1,126,217
  24. SS 29 Talanoa Hufanga(2024)- $1,115,038
  25. RB 25 Elijah Mitchell(2024)- $1,100,893
  26. CB 26 Samuel Womack III(2025)- $1,055,831
  27. LG/C 63 Nick Zakelj(2025)- $1,032,590
  28. NT 93 Kalia Davis(2025)- $1,018,003
  29. QB 13 Brock Purdy(2025)- $1,004,253
  30. RB 24 Jordan Mason(2024)- $988,334

So, the 49ers will be just fine when it comes to 2024, even if they do restructure all 3 of the reported players(Arik Armstead, Fred Warner, & Charvarius Ward), due to being able to extend the 3 players I mentioned(Arik Armstead, Dre Greenlaw, & Charvarius Ward), so don’t worry about 2024 when it comes to this offseason roster moves.

I also want to mention that Jauan Jennings will be a restricted free agent in 2024, and if the cap is indeed $256 million, he would likely get the 2nd-round tender, which would be worth $4.901 million.

Also, the 49ers will have the base salaries of several 2021 draft picks increase due to the Proven Performance Escalator, those will likely be Aaron Banks, Deommodore Lenoir, and Elijah Mitchell, while Talanoa Hufanga already is guaranteed to see his 2024 base salary escalate, as he was named to the Pro Bowl this past season, which means his salary will go up to the 2nd-round tender, which would, again, be worth $4.901 million, while the other 3 would likely get the original round tender, which isn’t known just yet, as OverTheCap.com doesn’t have the original round tender number listed.

Anyway, there you have it, an updated look at the 49ers 2023 salary cap situation with the 3 reported potential restructures, plus a look at 2024, so please consider following me on Twitter @49erscap for more salary cap information, and tidbits.
