An updated look at the 49ers 2022 salary cap situation with week 8 right around the corner

With week 7 behind us, and week 8 right around the corner, I think it’s time to take another deep look into the 49ers current 2022 salary cap situation as it stands today.

Right now, the 49ers have 80 players signed, accounting for $188,651,110, with $19,509,372 in dead money, for a total commitment of $208,432,648, leaving them $4,781,332 under their 2022 adjusted cap of $212,941,814, and the 49ers can create more cap room down the road by restructuring Fred Warner’s deal, or extending the likes of Samson Ebukam, Emmanuel Moseley, & Jimmie Ward.

Below is the 49ers current roster.

Now, let’s look at what the team needs in cap room for potential per game roster bonus paybacks.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $58,824

MLB Fred Warner- $29,412

CB Charvarius Ward- $80,000

That’s a total of $168,235, the 49ers would have needed to payback Jimmie Ward $29,412, but with him on injured reserve for at least 4 weeks, the 49ers should get back at least 4 weeks as a credit in 2023, a total of $117,647, along with $176,471, 4 weeks worth of Arik Armstead’s per game roster bonus, 5 weeks worth of Emmanuel Moseley’s per game roster bonus, which comes to $176,471, & 1 weeks worth of Trent Williams’ per game roster bonus, $44,118, meaning roster bonus credits would be a total of $514,706.

Now let’s look at what players have LTBE incentives for 2022.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $5.65 million, consisting of 15 games of the $250,000 incentive for 25% or more playtime in any game, 9 of the $100,000 for each game he won while playing 25% or more, $500,000 for 1 playoff game with 50% of more, & $500,000 for 50% or more playtime in the conference championship game.

WR Deebo Samuel- $150,000 for having 3 or more rush touchdowns in 2021.

TE Ross Dwelley- $152,500 for playtime, yards, touchdowns, & club achievement.

Next, let’s look at what players have incentives that are considered NLTBE.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $2.8 million, this consists of the other 2 games playing 25% or more for $250,000 each, 8 games of the $100,000 for wins in those games he plays 25% or more, $500,000 for winning the conference championship, & $1 million for playing 50% or more in the Super Bowl.

RB Jeff Wilson Jr.- $950,000, this is for playtime, rush yards, catches, & touchdowns

WR Deebo Samuel- $500,000 for 480 or more rush yards, and he has $150,000 already counting, so he can only earn $500,000, as the max value of the incentives are $650,000 per year.

WR Ray-Ray McCloud III- $700,000, breaks downs as $500,000 for 46% playtime, 40 catches, 400 receiving yards, 200 rush yards, & $200,000 for Pro Bowl selection.

DE Samson Ebukam- $500,000 for sacks, & Pro Bowl selection.

DE Kerry Hyder Jr.- $750,000 for sacks.

DE Jordan Willis- $77,500 for 4 sacks.

NT Hassan Ridgeway- $700,000 for playtime, & sacks.

CB Charvarius Ward- $500,000 for Pro Bowl and/or 1^st or 2^nd team All-Pro selection

CB Jason Verrett- $152,500 for 55% playtime

SS George Odum- $1.5 million, but these are unknown, most likely for playtime, tackles, interceptions, and Pro Bowl selection.

Next, let’s look at what kind of adjustments/credits the 49ers can get back in 2023.

First off, the 49ers have a projected $8,571,901 in cap room, but that’s with just 33 players signed, so when they have enough players signed to get to the top 51 rule, they’d be $4,928,099 over the cap, so any amount will help greatly.

Before I go over what the 49ers can get back in 2023, let’s look at the 30 players signed for 2023, with their cap number.

Now, let’s look at what the 49ers can get back in 2023.

First up are the veterans.

QB Nate Sudfeld- $1.035 million out of $2 million that he was guaranteed when he signed with the 49ers in the offseason, so they’ll eat $965,000.

WR Malik Turner- $300,000, as Turner’s practice squad salary is $358,200, but this is depended on him staying on the practice squad, or another teams’ practice squad, or 53-man roster.

WR Marcus Johnson- $250,000, as Johnson was signed by the Giants to their 53-man roster, so if he stays on their 53-man roster, they’ll get that back as well.

DE Kemoko Turay- $865,178, if Turay stays on the 53-man roster for the remainder of the 2022 season, or at least on the teams’ injured reserve list.

CB Dontae Johnson- $358,200, maybe more, as he could be activated up to 3 times, which would make it $471,000, or more if the team or another team signs him to their 53-man roster.

That’s a total of $2,808,378.

Next are UDFAs that were given guarantees in their base salaries.

WR Tay Martin- $45,000

RG Jason Poe- $65,000

SLB Marcelino McCrary-Ball- $100,000

CB Qwuantrezz Knight- $25,000

FS Tayler Hawkins- $50,000

All of these players are on the 49ers practice squad, so if they stick, the 49ers should get back a total of $285,000.

They also gave out the following to players not on their, or another teams’ practice squad.

C Dohnovan West- $100,000

DT Kevin Atkins- $10,000

MLB Jeremiah Gemmel- $70,000

That’s a total of $180,000, but right now they wouldn’t get back any of it since none are signed to a practice squad.

Also, I must note that both Leon O’Neal Jr., & Sam Schlueter got guarantees, but because they were waived off of injured reserve with an injury settlement, the 49ers won’t get those back per the CBA.

Also, the 49ers could get back Ross Dwelley’s $152,500.

So, the 49ers should get back as much as $3,760,584 in 2023, which would put the team around $12.332 million in cap room to begin the 2023 offseason, but with just 33 players signed, with 51 signed they’d be $1.167 million over a projected $225 million cap.

Now, the 49ers will need salary cap room to sign their own free agents, or bring in any outside free agents, and sign their draft picks, so they’d have to do some restructuring, with the candidates below, with cap savings.

RB Christian McCaffrey – $8.576 million max, $7,146,666 minimum

TE George Kittle – $8.456 million max, $7,927,500 minimum

LT Trent Williams – $14.588 million max, $13,676,250 minimum

DT Arik Armstead – $11.78 million max, $11,043,750 minimum

MLB Fred Warner – $9.476 million max, $8,883,750 minimum

Now, let’s look at the teams’ pending free agents.

Now, if the salary cap does come in at $225 million, the RFA tenders would look something like this, courtesy/credit to OverTheCap.com.

1^st-Round Tender: $6.011 million

2^nd-Round Tender: $4.308 million

Original Round Tender: $2.745 million

Right of First Refusal Tender: $2.629 million

If the 49ers want to tender Kevin Givens, who’s been having a good year thus far, they’d either do the ROFR, which is $2.629 million, or the 2^nd-round tender, which is $4.308 million.

I expect them to tender Colton McKivitz, which would be the original round tender of $2.745 million, and as for Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, if they let Azeez Al-Shaair walk, they may tender him, but no higher than the ROFR tender of $2.629 million.

As for the teams’ ERFAs, all 3(Jauan Jennings, Blake Hance, & Curtis Robinson) would require the $940,000 tender.

Of the teams’ UFAs, the ones I’d consider bringing back if I’m the 49ers are running backs Jeff Wilson Jr., & Tevin Coleman, center Jake Brendel, defensive ends Samson Ebukam, Kerry Hyder Jr., & Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Akeem Spence, nose tackle Hassan Ridgeway, strongside linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, & free safety Tashaun Gipson Sr.

I wouldn’t expect these players, outside of Ebukam, Al-Shaair, & Moseley to cost more than a few million a year, some like Brendel, Hyder, & Gipson in the veteran minimum range.

I haven’t listed Mike McGlinchey, Jason Verrett, or Jimmie Ward for different reasons.

McGlinchey will likely end up either playing bad, or play his way out of the 49ers price range, ala Laken Tomlinson, & D.J. Jones did.

Verrett has yet to play this season, so I’d need to see how he look’s out there, especially Verrett, but I’d love to see him, & Jimmie Ward back.

If we also add in projected draft pick cap numbers, which I posted not long ago, the 49ers would have a rookie pool of $6,722,342, but only the first 2 picks would count in the offseason, due to the top 51 rule.

If we add in those picks in, plus the 6 tenders, the 49ers would be $5,212,857 over the cap with 47 players signed, with 51 signed they’d be $8,212,857 over, so they’ll need to restructure some players contracts, with the most likely ones being McCaffrey, Williams, & Warner, which would save a max of $32.64 million, which would give the 49ers $24.428 million to spend on their own players, or to replace players who leave, but this doesn’t take into account Nick Bosa’s pending extension, which should save some money.
