With the recent news of Washington Commanders’ wide receiver Terry McLaurin getting a new contract extension, reportedly worth in the $23.5 million a year range, with a $28 million signing bonus, so I think it’s time to look at what this means for the 49ers, & star wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
This means for the 49ers that they’re going to have to pony up for Deebo Samuel, and that’s if he is willing to sign an extension, thus rescinding his trade request.
This deal is also somewhat of a template for a potential high money, huge deal extension for Samuel, who is set to make $3.936 million in 2022, and with the high signing bonus that McLaurin reportedly received, it may take that kind of bonus to get a deal done with Samuel.
In order for the 49ers to give Samuel a similar $28 million signing bonus, they’ll have to lower his base salary down to the league minimum of $965,000, which is a $2.971 million difference, but that would be a $2.629 million difference, but the McLaurin deal is a 3-year extension, which means, unless it contains a voidable year, the signing bonus prorates over 4-years, at $7 million a year, something the 49ers will likely want to avoid doing, as they’re known for extending their own and not increasing the players salary cap number by that much.
So, the 49ers will likely want to include a smaller signing bonus, something in the $25 million range, which would require an additional $2.029 million, on top of the $2.971 million difference if the 49ers lowered Deebo’s base salary to the league minimum.
The 49ers should, and likely will try to put in a protected option bonus, like what they’ve done in the Kyle Juszyzck, George Kittle, Arik Armstead, & Fred Warner contracts, and the protected part means that the player is guaranteed to receive that bonus, either as it being added to their base salary that year, or as a true option bonus that would prorate over a maximum of 5-years.
And with McLaurin getting $23.5 million a year, along with the likes of A.J. Brown getting $25 million, and Cooper Kupp $26.7 million a year, it’s safe to assume that any deal for Samuel will come in that $25 million to $26 million a year range.
As for the guaranteed money, Kupp leads the way with overall guarantees, at $75 million, while Brown leads with fully guaranteed money, $56,470,471, so expect something in the same range for a Deebo Samuel extension.
If the 49ers give Deebo a $25 million signing bonus, expect his 2022-2024 base salaries to be fully guaranteed, along with a $15 million option bonus, plus per game roster bonuses, & workout bonuses each year.
Now, will we see a Deebo Samuel extension get done before the season, more importantly before training camp begins? Hopefully we do, this all depends on Deebo Samuel rescinding his trasde request, and that Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch, & the 49ers mending fences with Deebo.
So, if a deal is to happen, expect it to be done sometime in late July, early August, and expect it to be a massive extension, one that will be well worth it, as Deebo Samuel is the teams’ best player in my eyes.
