Today, we continue our 9-part series showing how much of the 49ers 2022 salary cap a certain position group takes up, and today we continue with the defensive backs.

Players Under Contract: CB Charvarius Ward(2024), CB Ambry Thomas(2024), CB Emmanuel Moseley(2022), FS Jimmie Ward(2022), SS Talanoa Hufanga(2024), FS Tarvarius Moore(2022), SS George Odum(2024), SS Leon O’Neal Jr.(2024), FS Tayler Hawkins(2024), CB Deommodore Lenoir(2024), CB Samuel Womack(2025), CB Tariq Castro-Fields(2025), CB Dontae Johnson(2022), CB Darqueze Dennard(2022), CB Jason Verrett(2022), CB Ka’dar Hollman(2022), & CB Qwuantrezz Knight(2024)

Total Cap Hit: $35,994,733

Beginning with the expected starters, we have new 49er Charvarisu Ward($3.8 million against the cap), Ambry Thomas($1,087,693), Emmanuel Moseley($6,555,529), Jimmie Ward($12,935,588), & Tarvarius Moore($1.035 million), this is a solid group, I love the Ward signing, Jimmie Ward is a great player, underrated, Moseley should move inside to the slot, with Thomas opposite C.Ward during nickel plays, and Moore I envision as the teams’ starting strong safety.

I also believe in Deommodore Lenoir($896,217), Samuel Womack($775,831), & Tariq Castro-Fields($738,003) to round out the cornerback spots, with Womack & Lenoir being potential nickel corner/slot corners, and Castro-Fields as a main backup outside cornerback.

When it comes to the backup safeties, you’re going to have Talanoa Hufanga($885,038), & George Odum($1.435 million) as the primary backups, with Hufanga being able to also play linebacker if needed, and Odum being a guy who is a primary special teams ace, but can also play safety when needed.

I don’t see Qwuantrezz Knight($705,000), Ka’dar Hollman($895,000), & Tayler Hawkins($705,000) making the team, but they should be practice squad candidates.

When it comes to Dontae Johnson($1,047,500), & Darqueze Dennard($895,000), I envision them as being on the practice squad to begin the 2022 season.

And as for Jason Verrett($895,000), I expect him to beginon either reserve/PUP, or injured reserve, so he can come back after either 3 games or 6 games.
