Starting today, I’m going to have a 9-part series showing how much of the 49ers 2022 salary cap a certain position group takes up, and today we start off with the Quarterbacks.

Players Under Contract(4): Trey Lance(2024), Jimmy Garoppolo(2022), Nate Sudfeld(2022), & Brock Purdy(2025)

Total Cap Hit: $37,425,448

Let’s begin with the expected starter, Trey Lance, who is set to have a $7,751,195 cap number in 2022, and it’s time for the Trey Lance era to begin in San Fran, clear & simple, the 49ers need to give Lance all of the 1st-team snaps.

Next is the incumbent starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, who is set to count $26.95 million, and if the 49ers were to release him right now, they’d save $18.05 million, while having to pay him $7.5 million, due to him having an injury guarantee in his contract that only kicks in if Garoppolo is released while injured.

But the above won’t happen, so the most likely scenario is that the 49ers hold onto Garoppolo, and either trade or release him, clearing $25.15 million in cash, & $24.255 million in cap room, this is because a player making $895,000 would take his spot on the top 51.

Next we have Nate Sudfeld, who received a 1-year, fully guaranteed $2 million deal, with $1 million in incentives, and at the time this deal shocked me, I thought for sure it was a veteran minimum deal, but this deal would indicate that Sudfeld is QB2, but with Garoppolo still on the roster, & maybe they do keep him, Sudfeld becomes a $2 million fully guaranteed QB3, if they even keep 3 QBs.

Last up is the 49ers 7th-round pick, 262nd-overall, Iowa State’s Brock Purdy, who will count $724,253 once he signs his rookie contract, and, well, Purdy is set to be the teams’ practice squad quarterback, as I don’t envision anyway the 49ers end up keeping Purdy on the 53-man roster.
