Alright, we’re just over 72 hours until the new league year begins, while the legal tampering period begins tomorrow at Noon eastern/9am pacific time, so it’s time for one last mock offseason plan.
As I went over in yesterday’s article, the 49ers have 52 players currently signed, with a cap commitment of $217,771,220, along with $5,167,726 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $222,938,946, which leaves the 49ers, after factoring in the top 51 rule, $9,709,385 over their 2022 adjusted cap.
Again, below are the 52 players, and their 2022 cap numbers.
- QB Jimmy Garoppolo(2022) – $26,950,000

Now, the 49ers still must decide on their restricted free agents, and as of now, nothing has been reported on any of the 3, those being, right guard Daniel Brunskill, defensive tackle Kentavius Street, & stronside linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.
So, in my mock offseason plan, I have the 49ers re-signing Brunskill, & Street to 1-year deals, worth $1.265 million, and Al-Shaair to a 3-year deal, worth $10.5 million, with a $1,298,333 2022 cap number.
That brings the 49ers to 55 players signed/tendered, leaving them $11,352,718 over their 2022 adjusted cap, meaning we have to restructure 2-3 players, with those being tight end George Kittle, left tackle Trent Williams, & defensive tackle Arik Armstead, saving $8.332 million for Kittle, $4.904 million for Williams, & $10.424 million for Armstead, for a total of $23.66 million, while they’d end up losing $5.915 million in 2023 salary cap, while also adding $2.083 million to Kittle’s 2023-2025 cap numbers, $1.226 million to Williams’ 2023-2026 cap numbers, & $2.606 million to Armstead’s 2023-2024 cap numbers.
So, after restructuring Kittle, Armstead, & Williams, this leaves the 49ers with $12,307,282 under their 2022 adjusted cap, meaning they’re cap compliant by the time the new league year opens, with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, & his $26.95 million cap hit still on the roster.
Next up is trading Garoppolo, now I don’t know if it’s true that the 49ers were offered a 2nd-round pick for him, as it was reported by John Middlekauff yesterday, so I’m going to go with a more likely route, by trading Garoppolo to the Indianapolis Colts for pick 73, a conditional 2023 3rd-round pick that can turn into a 2nd-round pick with playtime triggers, and a swap of the 49ers & Colts 3rd-round picks, meaning the 49ers get pick 82, and the Colts get pick 91.
So, the trade breaks down like this.
49ers receive: 2 2022 3rd-rounders(73rd-overall & 82nd-overall), & a conditional 2023 3rd-rounder, that can become a 2023 2nd-rounder if Garoppolo meets certain playtime triggers.
Colts receive: QB Jimmy Garoppolo, & a 2022 3rd-rounder(91st-overall).
This would give the 49ers the following 10 draft picks, assuming they do get 3 7th-round compensatory picks.
Round 2- 61st-overall
Round 3- 73rd-overall (from Colts)
Round 3- 82nd-overall (from Colts)
Round 3- 102nd-overall (Compensatory Pick for losing Mike McDaniel)
Round 4- 133rd-overall
Round 5- 172nd-overall
Round 6- 186th-overall (from Broncos)
Round 7- 252nd-overall (Compensatory Pick for losing Solomon Thomas)
Round 7- 255th-overall (Compensatory Pick for losing Kerry Hyder Jr.)
Round 7- 262nd-overall (Compensatory Pick for losing C.J. Beathard)
These 10 picks would cost $8,745,741 in 2022, $10,709,502 in 2023, $12,481,015 in 2024, & $14,198,652 in 2025.
Now that Garoppolo has been traded, the 49ers will start the new league year with $37,032,282 in 2022 salary cap room, with 54 players signed for 2022.
Below are those 54 players are below, with their 2022 cap number.

With this roster, the 49ers would have a cap commitment of $170,367,097, along with $16,375,160, for a total of $202,964,917, putting the 49ers $10,409,244 under their 2022 adjusted cap, but their practice squad will cost around $2,905,200, leaving them with $7,504,044 in salary cap room to begin the 2022 season.
Going forward the 49ers would have the following in salary cap room from 2023-2026.
2023- $18,453,090 ($9,453,090 top 51), with 39 players signed, on a $225 million salary cap (If for some reason the salary cap does rise higher, to say $238 million in 2023, the 49ers would have $31,453,090 with the 39 players signed, & with 51 signed, they’d have $22,453,090, if this happens.)
2024- $25,434,994 ($11,919,994 top 51), with 34 players signed, on a $256 million salary cap
2025- $39,478,098 ($15,958,098 top 51), with 23 players signed, on a $280 million salary cap
2026- $102,940,500 ($65,770,500 top 51) with 9 players signed, on a $300 million salary cap
Under this mock offseason, the 49ers would be able to extend wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in 2023, by lowering his base salary, using some cap room, giving him a $15 milliion signing bonus, and somewhere between $18 million to $20 million a year, and this is a must re-sign/extend for the 49ers, this is their best WR group(Deebo/Aiyuk/Jennings) that they’ve had in years, so yes the 49ers can keep Aiyuk.
