Ok, so lately I’ve been doing a good amount of roster projections, but for today, I decided to do two different roster projections, basically one with 3 quarterbacks, and one with just 2 quarterbacks, but I’ll be doing 2 of these, based off of Jaquiski Tartt being on the active roster vs. the PUP list.

First up is the 3 quarterbacks roster & Tartt on PUP.

With this roster, the 49ers would have $3,696,826 in cap room to begin 2021.

Some thoughts below.

At the 3rd QB, Sudfeld clearly has the edge over Rosen, who has taken some steps backwards.

At the 4th RB, I went with Gallman, but I can see Hasty stealing his spot, thus Gallman could be on the teams practice squad.

At WR, I have 2 things to say, first, I was torn on who the 5th & 6th WRs should be, I went with Sanu, & Benjamin for the experiences, and second, with these 2, plus Aiyuk, Deebo, Sherfield, & Hurd also on the roster, which wide receiver is inactive, Aiyuk, Deebo, & Sherfield are locks, as Aiyuk & Deebo are our top 2 wideouts, while Sherfield is one of the best gunners in the NFL, so, do they inactivate Hurd, Sanu, or Benjamin? I’d hate to see Hurd inactive, & if so, then both Sanu & Benjamin, who ever inactive, their salaries are guaranteed.

At TE, the 4 are obvious one, I don’t see Kyle Shanahan going with less than 4, and the 4 I have are locks in my eyes.

On the O-Line, the 8 I have are all locks, and with Jaylon Moore being used primarily as a Tackle, according to TheAthletic’s David Lombardi, this really makes a 9th OL not needed, as the only other lineman worthy of a spot is Coleman, but his salary becomes fully guaranteed, besides, the team can sign him the next day to the practice squad, as he doesn’t go through waivers.

The D-Line is the same as the O-Line, all 10 of mine are locks, initially, months back, when it was unsure if Ford would be back, I have Jordan Willis on the roster, which would have guaranteed his salary, but with him being suspended 6 games, and Ford looking like he’s healthy, this is easy, plus Willis won’t be guaranteed any money, same as Arden Key & Maurice Hurst Jr. as both aren’t vested veterans, so their salaries aren’t guaranteed week 1, but they go through waivers.

At LB, the 5th spot, I went with Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, based on reports from camp that he’s flashed. I have Warner, Greenlaw, Al-Shaair, & Harris as locks, so the competition is down to Flannigan-Fowles, along with veteran James Burgess Jr., & UDFAs Justin Hilliard, Elijah Sullivan, & Jonas Griffith.

At CB, these 5 are locks, either due to their play from 2020, their contracts being guaranteed, or being draft picks, that are the only cornerbacks under contracts are those 2.

At Safety, I decided that Tony Jefferson II was the best choice at the 2nd free safety spot, yes it guarantees his salary, but he gives needed experience, while as strong safety, with Tartt likely to be on reserve/PUP to begin 2021, then the veteran Tavon Wilson, whose salary would also be guaranteed, gets the nod, plus both Jefferson & Wilson can play both safety spots.

Again, with the team being just over $3.671 million under, and needing $1,432,352 to potentially payback 15 players, they may need to create some cap room, with Arik Armstead being the most obvious choice, and I’ll explain below.

By restructuring Armstead’s deal, it frees up $4.528 million, while only adding $1.132 million to his 2022-2024 cap numbers, which is very much doable, and, in my opinion, is well worth it.

I wouldn’t touch Jimmy Garoppolo’s deal, or Jimmie Ward’s deal, as the savings goes down to $7.18 million for Garoppolo if/when he’s let go, and just $1.64 million for Ward if let go.

Now if those numbers are the max that they can save by adding in voidable years, 3 for Garoppolo, and 2 for Ward, as 2023 is a void year for Ward, so as for the minimum, their savings go down to $14,087,500, for Garoppolo, and $2,616,666 for Ward.

Now, the only logical choice is Laken Tomlinson, who already has 3 voidable years on his deal, so if they add 1 more, they can save $2.808 million, but they also end up losing $2.808 million in 2022, as Tomlinson already has a dead money hit of $1,005,530 from his 2020 restructure.

Now, the minimum that they can save, is $2,632,500, which would also be lost in 2022, that’s if they don’t come to an agreement on an extension, which is something they may consider, a team friendly extension.

Next is the 3 quarterbacks roster, with Tartt on the 53-man roster.

With this roster, the 49ers would begin the 2021 season with $4,025,626 in salary cap room.

I decided to go with Tavon Wilson on the roster, even with Tartt on there too, while knocking Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to the practice squad, over B.W. Webb.

Now the reason for Wilson over Flannigan-Fowles is, well, the fact that Hufanga has the ability to play linebacker if needed.

Next is the 2 quarterbacks roster, with Tartt on PUP.

With this roster, the 49ers would be $4,129,226 under the salary cap to begin the 2021 season.

Now, the dilemma I had, was the 53rd roster spot, I was down to maybe a 7th WR, 11th DL, 6th LB, or a 6th CB, with guys like Jauan Jennings, Kentavius Street, Justin Hilliard, B.W. Webb, Dontae Johnson, & Jared Mayden considered, so I went with a 6th CB/11th DB, Mayden, who can play cornerback, free safety, & strong safety.

Again, the 49ers would need to create cap room to payback 15 players’ per game roster bonuses, a total of $1,432,352, with Arik Armstead, as I said earlier, being the logical one, savings $4.528 million.

Finally, we have the 2 quarterback roster, with Tartt on the 53-man roster.

Ok, so with this roster, the 49ers would start the 2021 season with $5,181,826 in cap room, but still would need to create cap room to payback $1,432,352 to 15 different players’ per game roster bonuses, with Arik Armstead, again, being the obvious choice, clearing $4.528 million.

Again, I had the dilemma of the 53rd spot, but I went with Jared Mayden again, as, like I said, can play cornerback, free safety, & strong safety.

Ok, so, the overall cap room, both with & without the restructure of Arik Armstead is below.

3 QBs + Tartt on PUP: $3,696,826, $8,224,826 with Armstead restructure
3 QBs + Tartt on Active Roster: $4,025,626, $8,553,626 with Armstead restructure
2 QBs + Tartt on PUP: $4,789,226, $9,317,226 with Armstead restructure
2 QBs + Tartt on Active Roster: $5,181,826, $9,709,826 with Armstead restructure

As for the players who the 49ers will need to payback per game roster bonuses that don’t count against the cap are below.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo – $517,647
RB Raheem Mostert – $132,353
FB Kyle Juszyzck – $23,529
TE George Kittle – $52,941
TE Ross Dwelley – $11,765
C Alex Mack – $70,588
LG Laken Tomlinson – $23,529
LT Trent Williams – $132,353
DE Arik Armstead – $44,118
DE Samson Ebukam – $29,412
NT D.J. Jones – $44,118
NT Zach Kerr – $20,588
SLB Marcell Harris – $5,882
CB Jason Verrett – $235,294
FS Jimmie Ward – $88,235
