Today we continue out 9-part series of ranking the 49ers roster, from 1-90, and we’re entering the top 30, with players 30-21.

30. FS Tarvarius Moore

2021 Cap Number:
Chance At Making Active Roster: Will likely begin on PUP

Analysis: Moore, unfortunately, suffered a torn Achilles during the 49ers offseason workout program, which could end his season, but I think the 49ers place him on reserve/PUP in hopes that he can make a recovery, ala Michael Crabtree, and return late in the season, if the 49ers are in playoff contention, but the injury hurts, and sucks, as I was hoping Moore would breakout, and become the teams new free safety in 2022, but it looks more likely Jimmie Ward will be the FS in 2022, while Moore will sign a 1-year prove it deal.

29. CB Ambry Thomas

2021 Cap Number: $870,154
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: The 49ers finally addressed the cornerback spot late in the 3rd-round, when they selected Michigan’s Ambry Thomas with the 102nd-overall pick, and Thomas has all of the talent, and ability to turn into a solid starting outside cornerback in the future.

28. CB Emmanuel Moseley

2021 Cap Number: $2,652,000
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: The 49ers re-signed Moseley to a 2-year deal, worth $9.384 million, a $4.692 million average per year, with $4.384 million fully guaranteed, with his 2022 base salary of $4.4 million guaranteed for injury/skill, and fully guaranteed on April 1, 2022, so the 49ers are betting on Moseley, who has struggled at times, to have a breakout season in 2021, as he should start opposite Jason Verrett.

27. RB Trey Sermon

2021 Cap Number: $885,988
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: When the 49ers traded up from the 4th-round all the way to pick 88, and selected running back Trey Sermon, it came as a shock, but it also came with a lot being happy that the 49ers addressed the running back position so early, since they had no backs under contract for 2022, but with Sermon, & also Elijah Mitchell, they now have 2 signed for 2022, and I truly believe Sermon will eventually become RB #1 this season, and very well make Raheem Mostert expendable.

26. DE Dee Ford

2021 Cap Number: $8,909,997
Chance At Making Active Roster: Will likely begin 2021 on either PUP or Short Term IR

Analysis: Dee Ford is a player that a lot of 49ers fans wished the team would have just gotten rid of, but as I tried to tell them that it wasn’t that simple, as he had a $11.6 million injury guarantee, that would have become fully guaranteed on April 1, 2021, they would have lost cap room, despite some saying who care, well, it would have been a dumb move, because they were able to get Ford to redo his deal, in which the 49ers saved over $11 million in 2021, plus over $9 million in 2022, with their being a lot of optimism that Dee can play in 2021, and if he does, while giving the team anywhere near his 2019 numbers, then it’s a big time win-win.

25. RB Jeff Wilson Jr.

2021 Cap Number: $2,050,000
Chance At Making Active Roster: Will Start on PUP

Analysis: Wilson was the 49ers leading rusher in 2020, as well as leading the team in rushing touchdowns, but during the offseason workout program, he suffered a torn meniscus, which will sideline him until sometime in November, so he’ll begin the season on reserve/PUP, and if the 49ers are in playoff contention, the 49ers will bring Wilson up, if he’s healthy enough, and give them a boost, as we know injuries in the backfield have been an achilles heal for the 49ers.

24. RG Aaron Banks

2021 Cap Number: $1,286,110
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: The 49ers finally addressed what many 49ers fans would say was their biggest weakness, the interior of their offensive line, with the addition of Aaron Banks, who is solid in both run blocking, as well as pass protection, he should fill in right away as the teams starting right guard, and hopefully he helps solidify the right side, along with helping fellow Golden Domer Mike McGlinchey improve his pass protection.

23. CB Jason Verrett

2021 Cap Number: $5,264,706
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: The 49ers brought back Jason Verrett, who actually turned down multi-year offers, and signed a 1-year deal, worth $5.5 million, with an additional $1 million in incentives for making the Pro Bowl, and Verrett earned this deal, and while I wish he had signed for a more than 1-year, I think this is smart for both him & the 49ers, as the 49ers will get to see if he can stay healthy another season, and for him, he’ll have a chance to cash in next offseason after betting on himself, if so, let’s hope it’s with the 49ers.

22. QB Trey Lance

2021 Cap Number: $6,200,973
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: The 49ers dealt 2 future 1st-rounders, and a 2022 3rd-rounder to go from 12 to 3, in order to select North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, who is viewed as a dynamic quarterback, that offers Kyle Shanahan, and the 49ers what Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t, and that is speed & mobility, but I can’t rank him above Garoppolo, as Jimmy is a proven winner, and Lance hasn’t played a full season since 2019, so for now, Lance is the #2 QB, but the future of this franchise, likely in 2022, and beyond.

21. QB Jimmy Garoppolo

2021 Cap Number: $26,382,353
Chance At Making Active Roster: Lock

Analysis: While the 49ers flirted with the idea of trading for Matthew Stafford, or signing Andy Dalton, they ultimately held onto Jimmy Garoppolo, despite trading away 2 future 1st-rounders, and a 2022 3rd-rounder to draft his successor Trey Lance, Jimmy is still the 49ers guy, as we all know that Kyle Shanahan will be straight with you, he won’t lie, Jimmy will be here in 2021, the fact is, no team can afford to take on his salary in a trade, plus the fact that Jimmy has a no trade clause for 2021, but also the fact that Trey Lance, unless he completely makes Jimmy look horrible, just isn’t ready to start.
