Notes:
I went with 3 QBs, as I don’t see C.J. Beathard clearing waivers, previous assumption was that teams could put 4 players on the practice squad without exposing them to waivers, but I’ve received clarification, all players must clear waivers, and the 4 protected players must be protected by Tuesday 4PM EST each week, and they become unprotected on the following Monday, meaning they can sign elsewhere on that day.
At RB I went with just 3 players, I would prefer to keep Jeff Wilson Jr., but he would be the odd man out, and hopefully he passes waivers, and makes it to the teams practice squad.
I went with just 6 WRs this time, as Tavon Austin, J.J. Nelson, and Jaron Brown can be brought back at any time, as they’re vested veterans meaning they don’t have to go through waivers, plus if any made the final roster, their entire salary would be guaranteed for 2020.
At TE I went with 4, with Jordan Reed’s injury issues he’s had in the past, and I doubt Ross Dwelley would clear waivers.
On the O-Line, I have 9 players, with Weston Richburg starting the season on reserve/PUP, meaning he needs to miss the first 6 weeks of the season. I went with Ross Reynolds as the backup center/guard, as he’s been taking snaps in practice. Also Hroniss Grasu could be brought back at anytime, as he doesn’t need to go through waivers, plus as a vested veteran his salary would be guaranteed.
On the D-Line, I have them keeping 9 players, with Ronald Blair III being on the opening day roster, that could change if the team decides to place him on reserve/PUP. Jullian Taylor will start the season on reserve/PUP. I have the team keeping Kentavius Street, as I don’t see him clearing waivers. I also don’t have Dion Jordan on the final 53, as he can be brought back, and his salary would be guaranteed if he makes the final 53. I don’t see the 49ers cutting Kerry Hyder Jr., as he’s a favorite of DL coach Kris Koucerek, if he was cut, he’d save the 49ers $950,000.
At LB, I have 5, with Mark Nzeocha being cut, saving $1.45M, leaving just his workout bonus of $50,000 as dead money.
At DB, I have 10, with both Jason Verrett and Jamar Taylor making it, which would also guarantee their contracts for 2020, as they’re both vested veterans. I see Taylor making it due to him being a good Slot CB, and no one else has experience at the slot behind Williams. I went with Marcell Harris over Johnathan Cyprien for the time being, as like with any vested veteran, Cyprien can be had later on, and would have his entire salary guaranteed for the season if he makes the 53-man roster.
For the practice squad, I went with players who are currently on the teams 80-man active roster, obviously some guys they had on their could be re-signed to the practice squad, such as DeMarkus Acy, Jonas Griffith, Chris Finke, and Broc Rutter.
As for the salary cap, the 49ers, with 74 players signed(53 active, 5 injured, and 16 PS), they only have $1,361,038 in cap room. The team may have to restructure Jimmy Garoppolo and/or Dee Ford’s contracts, as that’s not a lot of money to head into 2020 with, so don’t expect any FA signings or trades that involve players making above the league minimum.
If, for instance the 49ers decide to keep Mark Nzeocha, that would mean that he would take up an additional $1.45M, well, he’d replace a player making at least $610K, so he’d take up at least $840,000, which would then leave the team with only $521,038 in cap room, so a restructure or 2 is going to be needed to be done, practice squad salaries are $8,400 a week for players with no more than 2 accrued years, and $12,000 for players with at least 3 accrued seasons. All players must pass waivers to make it to the teams practice squad, so players like Beathard, Dwelley, and Street likely wouldn’t make it through waivers.
As for other salary cap notes, the 49ers need $1,412,500 in cap room to pay back players per game roster bonuses, that includes the following 11 players, Dee Ford($234,375), Richard Sherman($62,500), Kyle Juszcyzk($100,000), Jaquiski Tartt($125,000), Tevin Coleman($31,250), Kwon Alexander($375,000), Weston Richburg($75,000), Jimmie Ward($93,750), K’Waun Williams($15,625), Tom Compton($50,000), and Trent Williams($250,000), so the team would absolutely need to restructure either Garoppolo and/or Ford’s deals, that would save a combined $28.504 million in cap room.
My cap numbers include Kittle’s $3.6M in prorated bonus, but I’m not sure his exact structure, so they could have lowered his base salary from $2.133M to $825K, which would save $1.308M in cap room.
To those who may not be aware, practice squad salaries do count against the cap.
As for 2021, before knowing Kittle’s 2021 cap number, but including his prorated bonus of $3.6M, I have the 49ers at $17,535,528 in cap room with just 34 players signed, so they’ll still need to restructure some deals in 2021 to have enough room to retain the likes of Trent Williams, Kyle Juszcyzk, Richard Sherman, K’Waun Williams, Jaquiski Tartt, D.J. Jones, and others.
Here are potential savings:
Jimmy Garoppolo:
2020: $18,312,000
2021: $18,420,000 without 2020 restructure, $13,842,000 with 2020 restructure
Dee Ford:
2020: $10,192,000
2021: $11,425,000 without 2020 restructure, $8,877,000 with 2020 restructure
Kwon Alexander:
2021: $9,180,000 restructure, $6,102,377 Pre June 1 cut/trade, $13,400,000 Post June 1 cut/trade
Weston Richburg:
2021: $5,420,000 restructure, $1,709,436 Pre June 1 cut/trade, $8,350,000 Post June 1 cut/trade
Arik Armstead:
2021: $4,460,000 restructure
Jimmie Ward:
2021: $5,860,000 restructure, $3,500,000 Pre June 1 cut/trade, $5,500,000 Post June 1 cut/trade
Total Savings:
2021 restructures: $54,765,000 without Garoppolo/Ford 2020 restructures, $76,143,000 with Garoppolo/Ford 2020 restructures
