With the 2020 NFL Draft being held later this week, from the 23rd through the 25th, I thought it was an appropriate time to recap the 49ers 2020 offseason thus far.

The 49ers started the offseason period off by retaining defensive end Arik Armstead, on a 5-year deal, worth $17 million a year, with over $34 million fully guaranteed.

Armstead received a $17.5 million signing bonus, along with his 2020, and 2021 salaries fully guaranteed. He also has a protected $7.5 million option bonus, which is guaranteed at signing, and if the 49ers choose to exercise the option bonus, an additional $1.5 million in prorated money will be there for the next 5 years, as AA signed what is actually a 6-year, $102 million deal, but it voids on the 5th day of the waiver period in 2025, unless the 49ers reach an extension with Armstead.

Next up the 49ers dealt what many, including myself, believe to be the second best interior defensive lineman in the game, in DeForest Buckner, to the Indianapolis Colts for the 13th-overall pick in this weeks draft. The move saved the team over $11.7 million in cap room at the time.

The 49ers followed this up by re-signing free safety Jimmie Ward to a 3-year deal, worth $9.5 million a year, with $13 million in fully guaranteed money.

Ward received a $8 million signing bonus, his 2020 base salary, and $3.5 million of his 2021 base salary fully guaranteed. The 49ers also added in a 4th year, that voids, likely the same situation, where it voids unless the 49ers extend Ward before the 2023 waiver period.

The 49ers then signed several free agents to 1-year deals, below are those players, and terms.

wide receiver Travis Bennjamin signed a 1-year $1.05 million deal, with no guaranteed money.

center Ben Garland signed a 1-year deal, worth $2 million, with a $1.75 million base salary, $1,137,500 of which is fully guaranteed, and a $250,000 per game roster bonus.

offensive guard Tom Compton signed a 1-year deal, worth $2.75 million, with a $2.15 million base salary, $550,000 of which is fully guaranteed, a $200,000 signing bonus, and a $400,000 per game roster bonus.

offensive tackle Shon Coleman signed a 1-year deal, with a $825,000 base salary, and a $137,500 signing bonus.

defensive end Ronald Blair III signed a 1-year deal, with a $2.16 million fully guaranteed base salary, and a $137,500 signing bonus, but used a new provision, the four year qualifying contract provision, which allows them to pay Blair more money, but his cap number is much smaller, under $1.05 million for 2020.

defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr. signed a 1-year deal, worth $1.5 million, with a $1.25 million base salary, $550,000 of which is fully guaranteed, and a $250,000 per game roster bonus.

linebacker Joe Walker, signed a 1-year deal, worth $900,000, with a $825,000 base salary, and a $75,000 per game roster bonus.

cornerbacks Jason Verrett and Donate Johnson have signed 1-year deals, but terms aren’t known at the time of this article.

The 49ers also restructured Jerick McKinnon’s contract, they eliminated the 2021 year, which saves $9.2 million in cap room in 2021, and they lowered his cap number for 2020 by over $3.6 million, down to just $4.91 million, with a potential $250,000 in per game roster bonuses, paid out over 16 games, due to him being on IR all of 2019, none of the $250,000 counts against the cap.

The 49ers also tendered several restricted, and exclusive rights free agents, with most of them signing their tenders already.

Including, running back Matt Breida, and wide receiver Kendrick Bourne, who both got the 2nd-round tender, and signed their 1-year, $3.259 million tenders.

quarterback Nick Mullens, running back Jeff Wilson Jr., and tight end Ross Dwelley were tendered 1-year deals, worth $750,000, while offensive guard Daniel Brunskill, and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley were tendered 1-year deals, worth $675,000.

The 49ers also released offensive guard Mike Person, which saved $1.75 million in cap room for 2020, and around $3 million in 2021.

As of now, the 49ers have 78 players signed for 2020, and have $11,157,451 in cap room, and have a total of 7 draft picks to work with this week, including the 13th, and 31st overall picks, along with 2 5th-rounders, a 6th-rounder, and 2 7th-rounders.

And according to OverTheCap.com, the 49ers rookie pool, if they were to keep all 7 picks, would be just $8,230,120.

Well there you have it, everything that has happened this offseason for your 49ers, now let’s see what they do this week, and the 2020 NFL Draft is upon us.
