This past Saturday it was reported by ESPN’s Field Yates that several NFL players had restructured their contracts, including 49ers C Weston Richburg, but while it’s unknown the details, if Richburg lowered his base salary in 2020 from $6.5 million to say $1 million, it would free up $4.49 million in cap room.
This restructuring comes off the heals of the 49ers redoing Kwon Alexander’s deal a few weeks back, where they created over $8.1 million in 2020 cap room.
Also of note, despite likely falling shy of his 90% play time, Richard Sherman was given his $1 million incentive as a bonus, it won’t count next year, but it’s a great gesture on the part of the 49ers organization. It’ll go along way in securing talent in the future.
Also with Jimmie Ward playing most of the game last night in Seattle, where the 49ers won the NFC West, and now hold the #1 seed in the NFC, Ward earned a $500,000 incentive for 75% play time. If the 49ers re-sign Ward, and he has incentives in his deal, this $500,000 will likely count against the cap in 2020.
Also Raheem Mostert has a $1 million incentive for play time and rush yards, he finished the year with 772 rushing yards, 8 rush TDs, and 2 receiving TDs, but the threshold is not known at this time, I’d imagine Mostert hit some of the incentives, which would count in 2020.
