It’s almost that time, with under 60 hours until the NFL’s legal tampering period opens, and less than 105 hours until the NFL’s new league year opens, it’s time for my 5th mock offseason plan.
Let’s start with where the 49ers are at for 2022 as of now.
The 49ers have 52 players under contract or tendered for 2022, with a cap commitment of $217,618,720, plus $5,167,726 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $222,786,446, but with just the top 51 player & dead money, the 49ers are $9,556,885 over their 2022 adjusted cap.
Below are those 52 players, and their 2022 cap numbers.

Below are the 49ers current pending free agents.
UFA:
RB Raheem Mostert
RB Trenton Cannon
WR Trent Sherfield
WR Travis Benjamin
WR Mohamed Sanu Sr.
WR Richie James Jr.
TE Ross Dwelley
LG Laken Tomlinson
RT Tom Compton
DE Arden Key
DE Jordan Willis
NT D.J. Jones

RFA:

DT Kentavius Street
SLB Azeez Al-Shaair
Ok, now it’s time for the mock offseason.
First off, the 49ers must be cap compliant by March 16th at 4pm eastern/1pm pacific, and that must include Jimmy Garoppolo being on the roster, so the 49ers will need to do some cap maneuvering, but first they’ll have to decide on their 3 restricted free agents.
I would sign right guard Daniel Brunskill, & defensive tackle Kentavius Street to 1-year deals, worth $1.265 million, and strongside linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair to a 3-year deal, worth $10.5 million, with a $1,298,333 2022 cap hit.
So now the 49ers would have 55 players signed or tendered for 2022, with a cap commitment of $221,447,054, along with $5,167,726 in dead money, a total cap commitment of $226,614,780, but their top 51 players & dead money would count $223,794,780, putting the 49ers $11,270,219 over their 2022 adjusted cap.
So, the 49ers, under this mock, must shed over $11.27 million, and they have some different choices, restructure tight end George Kittle($8.332 million max saved, $7,811,250 minimum saved), left tackle Trent Williams($4.904 million max/minimum saved), & defensive tackle Arik Armstead($10.424 million max saved, $9,772,500 minimum saved).
The 49ers could extend defensive end Samson Ebukam($3.892 million saved), cornerback Emmanuel Moseley($2.692 million saved), & free safety Jimmie Ward($6.224 million max saved, $5.835 million minimum saved), or they could could go to Ebukam about a pay cut, from $5.9 million to $1.035 million, saving $4.865 million, the 49ers would also give him incentives to try & recoup that $4.865 million, or they could release him, & save $6.5 million before the top 51 rule, $5.195 million after factoring in the top 51 rule.
The 49ers also have right tackle Mike McGlinchey, who has a fully guaranteed $10.88 million base salary, but what they can do is, do a pseudo extension, add 4 void years, saving $7.876 million, but also leaving $7.876 million in 2023 dead money, if the 49ers don’t extend him before the deal expires.
With such short time until the new league year, I would have the 49ers restructure the contracts of Arik Armstead, & Trent Williams, saving $15.328 million, putting the 49ers $4,057,781 under their 2022 adjusted cap.
By restructuring Arik Armstead, & Trent Williams, it would add $2.606 million to Armstead’s 2023-2024 cap numbers, along with $2.606 million to his 2025 dead money hit, as for Williams, it would add $1.226 million to his 2023-2026 cap numbers, a loss of $3.832 million combined from 2023-2025, & $1.226 million in 2026.
Next up is Jimmy Garoppolo, who I’d trade to the Indianapolis Colts for their 3rd-round pick(73rd-overall), a 2023 conditional 3rd-rounder that can become a 2nd-rounder, and a pick swap of the 49ers & Colts 3rd-rounders, with the 49ers getting pick 82, & the Colts getting pick 93, giving the 49ers the following draft picks.
2nd-Rounder(61st-overall)
3rd-Rounder(73rd-overall, via then Colts)
3rd-Rounder(82nd-overall, via the Colts)
3rd-Rounder(102nd-overall, Compensatory pick for losing Mike McDaniel)
4th-Rounder(133rd-overall)
5th-Rounder(172nd-overall)
6th-Rounder(186th-overall, via the Broncos)
7th-Rounder(252nd-overall, Compensatory pick for losing Solomon Thomas)
7th-Rounder(255th-overall, Compensatory pick for losing Kerry Hyder Jr.)
7th-Rounder(262nd-overall, Compensatory pick for losing C.J. Beathard)
The above 10 picks would count $8,745,741 for 2022, $10,709,502 in 2023, $12,481,015 in 2024, & $14,198,562 in 2025.
Now, after trading Garoppolo, the 49ers would save $25.845 million, putting them $28,902,781 under their 2022 adjusted cap to begin the 2022 new league year.
First, they’d have 54 players signed, with those players below, with their 2022 cap number.
- QB Trey Lance(2024) – $7,751,195
- QB Nate Sudfeld(2022) – $2,000,000 (Estimate)

- RB Trey Sermon(2024) – $1,107,485
- RB JaMycal Hasty(2022) – $895,000

- DE Charles Omenihu(2022) – $2,540,000

- P Mitch Wishnowsky(2022) – $1,156,018
- LS Taybor Pepper(2022) – $1,120,000
Ok, now that we’ve re-signed our RFAs, it’s time to look at what UFAs to bring back, and which to not.
I believe the 49ers will want to try and keep the following, running back Raheem Mostert, left guard Laken Tomlinson, defensive ends Arden Key, & Jordan Willis, nose tackle D.J. Jones, cornerbacks Jason Verrett, & K’Waun Williams, and strong safety Jaquiski Tartt.
But for my mock offseason I would keep all of them, and yes it’s possible, with the deals below.
RB Raheem Mostert – 1-year deal, worth up to $5 million with incentives, with a $1,764,706 2022 cap number
RB Trenton Cannon – 1-year deal, worth $1.035 million, but only $895,000 counts against the cap.
WR Trent Sherfield – 1-year deal, worth $1.035 million, but only $895,000 counts against the cap.
LG Laken Tomlinson – 5-year deal, worth $50 million, averaging $10 million a year, with $21.345 million in guaranteed money, and a $2.965 million 2022 cap number.
RT Tom Compton – 1-year deal, worth $1,272,500, with a $152,500 signing bonus, and a $1,047,500 2022 cap number.
DE Arden Key – 4-year deal, worth $16 million, averaging $4 million a year, with $6.5 million in guaranteed money, and a $1.285 million 2022 cap number.
DE Jordan Willis – 2-year deal, worth $4 million, averaging $2 million a year, with $1.535 million in guaranteed money, and a $1,443,824 2022 cap number.
NT D.J. Jones – 5-year deal, worth $30 million, averaging $6 million a year, with $10 million in guaranteed money, and a $2.5 million 2022 cap number.
CB Jason Verrett – 1-year deal, worth up to $5 million, with a $1,764,706 2022 cap number
CB K’Waun Williams – 3-year deal, worth $10.5 million, averaging $3.5 million a year, with $6.71 million in guaranteed money, and a $2,455,882 2022 cap number.
SS Jaquiski Tartt – 1-year deal, worth $2,522,500, with a $152,500 signing bonus, and a $1,272,500 2022 cap number.
I also, as you can see above, have the 49ers re-signing running back Jeff Wilson Jr., wide receiver Trent Sherfield, & right tackle Tom Compton to 1-year deals, worth the veteran minimum.
With these moves, this would put the 49ers $19,964,594 under their 2022 adjusted cap.
Next would be outside free agents, with needs being a backup quarterback behind Trey Lance, a speedy wide receiver/returner, & a potential #1 shut down cornerback.
So, I would sign the following.
QB Tyrod Taylor – 1-year deal, worth $5 million, with a $5 million 2022 cap number
WR/KR Ray-Ray McCloud – 4-year deal, worth $20 million, with a $3.5 million 2022 cap number
CB Levi Wallace – 5-year deal, worth $40 million, with a $2.635 million 2022 cap number
After adding these 3 players, the 49ers would have $11,514,594 in cap room.
Next are the extensions I would do.
WR Deebo Samuel – 5-year deal, worth $102.5 million, averaging $20.5 million a year, with $58.615 million in guaranteed money, and a $4,919,519 2022 cap number.
DE Nick Bosa – 5-year deal, worth $152.5 million, averaging $30.5 million a year, with $100 million in guaranteed money, and a $12,500,339 2022 cap number.
WLB Dre Greenlaw – 4-year deal, worth $14 million, averaging $3.5 million a year, with $5 million in guaranteed money, and a $1,245,429 2022 cap number.
FS Jimmie Ward – 4-year deal, worth $45 million, averaging $11.25 million a year, with $15.065 million in guaranteed money, and a $6,711,588 2022 cap number.
This would put the 49ers $17,389,919 under their 2022 adjusted cap, and this is due to Ward’s extension saving the team $6.224 million, while Greenlaw’s extension would save the team $1.375 million.
