Recently I took a look at the 49ers 2022 salary cap situation, with contract details, key dates, & today I’m going to give an update on the 49ers 2022 salary cap situation.
As of now, the 49ers have 43 players signed, accounting for $208,528,720, along with $5,167,725 in dead money, for a total of $213,696,445 in committed salaries, which would put them $3,320,061 over the 2022 cap, this includes $1,558,245 in carryover from 2021, & $618,139 in projected credits.
Now with 51 players signed, assuming the 8 players that would take up those final spots on the top 51 are making the rookie minimum of $750,000, they’d be $8,960,061 over the 2022 salary cap, which is projected to be at least $208.2 million.
The 49ers have yet to sign the remainder of their 2021 practice squad players to reserve/future deals, those being quarterback Nate Sudfeld, running back Brian Hill, center Jon Halapio, right tackle Wyatt Miller, nose tackle Darrion Daniels, strongside linebacker Mark Nzeocha, cornerbacks Darqueze Dennard, & Lavert Hill, & free safety Jarrod Wilson, so it’s unsure if the 49ers will be signing any of these players.
Below are the 43 players currently under contract for 2022.

Starting with the team’s ERFAs, these are set amounts, so for Hasty, McKivitz, Givens, & Flannigan-Fowles, their tender would be $895,000, while Jennings will be $825,000.
Now when it comes to the team’s RFAs, they have a few different options for each player when it comes to tendering them, for Brunskill, & Al-Shaair they can give them the right of first refusal, which would be $2.433 million, or they could give them the 2nd-round tender, which would be $3.986 million, as for Street, they could give him the original round tender, which would be $2.54 million, or the 2nd-round tender, again coming in at $3.986 million.
I expect the 49ers to not even tender their RFAs, but rather re-sign them to contracts worth less than the lowest tender, like they did last offseason with Jeff Wilson Jr., Ross Dwelley, & Marcell Harris, as all were signed to 1-year deals, worth less than the original round tender or right of first refusal tender, likely in the $1.265 million range for Brunskill, & Street, while Al-Shaair would get a multi-year deal, like Emmanuel Moseley did last offseason.
With these 8 players factored in, they would now have 51 players signed for 2022, giving them a total cap commitment of $216,763,720 for the 51 players, & $5,167,725 in dead money, for a total of $221,931,445, which would put the 49ers $11,555,061 over the 2022 salary cap.

By the time the new league year begins on Wednesday, March 16th, the 49ers will have to be under the salary cap, which pretty much means they must have agreed to a trade involving Jimmy Garoppolo, which would save the 49ers $25.55 million, while actually netting the team $13,994,939 in salary cap room to begin the new league year.
Now, coming up next Tuesday, left guard Laken Tomlinson’s contract will void, which leaves $1,204,059 in dead money, which is included in my numbers, so if the 49ers want to avoid that dead money, they need to re-sign Tomlinson before his contract voids.
The 49ers have 22 unrestricted free agents, they are listed below.

Of the team’s UFAs, they really should re-sign running back Jeff Wilson Jr., left guard Laken Tomlinson, defensive ends Arden Key, & Jordan Willis, nose tackle D.J. Jones, & cornerback K’Waun Williams to multi-year deals, while looking to sign running back Trenton Cannon, wide receiver Trent Sherfield, center Jake Brendel, right tackle Tom Compton, & strong safety Jaquiski Tartt to 1-year deals.
The 49ers should be able to retain most of these free agents with the $13,994,939 that they would have after trading Garoppolo, but other moves would have to be made to go into free agency and sign any outside free agents.
They will most likely go to defensive end Samson Ebukam & try to get him to a take a pay cut from his $5.9 million base salary, down the league minimum of $1.035 million, a savings of $4.865 million, and Ebukam would get NLTBE incentives for him to try to recoup the $4.865 million.
Other options for saving cap room include restructuring the contracts of tight end George Kittle($8.332 million saved), defensive tackle Arik Armstead($10.424 million saved), & free safety Jimmie Ward($6.332 million saved), which would be a total of $24.98 million, but the 49ers won’t restructure all 3 players.
They could do a pseudo extension with right tackle Mike McGlinchey, where they add on 4 voidable years, it would save the 49ers $7.876 million, but would leave $5.907 million in dead money in 2023.
As for the extensions for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, & defensive end Nick Bosa, the 49ers have already said they’ve budgeted for them, which to me says they’ll do what they did with Fred Warner.
For Deebo, they’ll take his base salary, lower it down to the minimum of $965,000, turn the difference into the prorated portion of a $15 million signing bonus, while only having to use $29,000 in cap room.
For Bosa, they’d likely take his $4,305,225 training camp roster bonus, turn that into the prorated portion of a $30 million signing bonus, while using up $1,694,775 in cap room.
So, for both extensions, the total cap numbers for both players would only go up by $1,723,775, but since they could release defensive end Dee Ford with a post June 1 designation, they’d save $1.505 million top 51 wise, so just a $218,775 difference between the savings from Ford’s release, & extensions for Deebo Samuel, & Nick Bosa.
