With rumors swirling around that Nick Bosa will sign a new deal before the season begins, and that he may be on his way to Santa Clara, California, home of the San Francisco 49ers, I think it’s time for another attempt at projecting a Nick Bosa contract extension.
Right now Bosa counts $17.859 million against the 2023 salary cap, but he won’t be playing on that number in my opinion, so what can be done to get Bosa to sign, well first off, you give him a $40 million signing bonus, which will prorate at $8 million a year, while you reduce his base salary to a fully guaranteed $1.08 million, meaning he counts just $9.08 million against the cap, saving the 49ers a much needed $8.779 million, which would be enough for the 49ers to get through the season, pending roster moves.
Now, when it comes to 2024, I honestly don’t see the 49ers going beyond the $14 million range, cap number wise that is, so to get there, you have a $8 million prorated amount from his $40 million signing bonus, then you add in a $500,000 fully guaranteed per game roster bonus, and a fully guaranteed $200,000 workout bonus, thank the Eagles for this, as they’re the team that started with guaranteeing per game roster bonuses, and workout bonuses.
Now, right there you have $8.7 million of the $14 million, leaving $5.3 million leftover, and he’ll no doubt get a guaranteed option bonus, but also I believe his base salary will be the league minimum of $1.125 million, leaving $4.175 million leftover, which would be the prorated amount of a $20.875 million option bonus.
Now, if we add all these numbers up, we get $63.78 million out of a potential $165 million, 5-year extension, which would be $33 million average per year, I believe Bosa gets in the $110 million guaranteed range, with $90 million being fully guaranteed, so in order to get the $90 million number, we’re short by $26.22 million, which could easily be his 2025 base salary, which would mean a $39.095 million 2025 cap number.
But we are still short $20 million for his total guaranteed money, so in order to get up to that number, I would guarantee him $20 million of his 2026 base salary for injury, and it would become fully guaranteed on April 1, 2025, an appraoch that the 49ers have taken with George Kittle, Fred Warner, Trent Williams, and Deebo Samuel’s extensions.
As for the cap numbers, they will be high from 2026-2028, but the cap should hit $300 million by 2026, and exceed that by 2028.
If the 49ers do a deal like this, then the 49ers would be around $15 million over the 2024 salary cap, which is projected at $256 million, but that’s far enough that I will go, I thank you for reading, and follow me on Twitter @49erscap.
