The 49ers opened the 2023 preseason today with a loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, in which Trey Lance started the game, had 112 passing yards, and a touchdown, which was a lucky TD as it bounced off the hands of a Raiders defender, and caught by Ross Dwelley.
Lance was sacked more 4 times, and the offensive line, which consisted of Jon Feliciano, Jason Poe, & Matt Pryor, among others, just didn’t do a good job of protecting Lance.
Some players that stood out were wide receiver/returner Ronnie Bell, a 7th round pick out of Michigan, who had a nice 24-yard kick return.
On the other hand, 3rd-round pick Cameron Latu had a nick 9 yard catch, but fumbled the ball away to the Raiders, which led to points for the Raiders.
On defense, Clelin Ferrell had a sack, while Marcelino McCrary-Ball ended up with 6 total tackles.
Another player who stood out was Ji’Ayir Brown, as he was physical, and ended with 3 tackles.
Sam Darnold played the 3rd quarter, and was 5/9, for 84 passing yards, no touchdowns, with 1 interception.
The 49ers were completely overpowered, both lines were dominated, but the good thing is that it wasn’t the first team offense, but this shows how much Nick Bosa means to the 49ers defense.
On special teams it wasn’t great, as rookie Jake Moody missed both of his field goal attempts, but there were some nice things, from Ronnie Bell’s nice WR end around/reverse, & a nice kick return, to Chris Conley having some nice 1st down conversions, to Ji’Ayir Brown’s physicality, the 49ers need to fix some things, but they should be fine come week 1 of the regular season, but they need to get Bosa extended.
