So the big rumor going around for the 49ers is that they’ll trade Trey Lance during the draft, and I’m here to explain why it makes zero sense.

Lance has a $9,301,434 2023 cap number, and if the 49ers were to trade Lance, his dead money would be $11,081,912, which means the 49ers would lose $1,780,478 in salary cap room, but that’s not top 51 wise, that’s with every player counting, which isn’t how the salary cap is calculated during the offseason, so top 51 wise, the 49ers would lose $840,478 in cap room.

But you may say if the 49ers can get a 1st-round pick, or a 2nd-round pick, shouldn’t they do it? No, because the team is less than $3 million under the 2023 salary cap, and that’s before knowing Kerry Hyder Jr.’s contract terms, so if they did trade Lance, the team would be down to $2,124,384, again, this is bef0re knowing Hyder’s terms.

Another reason why trading Lance making no sense is, the fact that Brock Purdy is still hurt, and there is no guarantee that he’ll be ready for week 1, plus the 49ers would have lost out on the backup quarterback market, free agent wise, and by trading Lance, you’re leaving a huge void on the roster, with only 1 healthy quarterback, in Sam Darnold.

Plus the 49ers aren’t going to give up on Lance, no matter what the media is saying, they traded 2 future 1st-round picks, and a 3rd-rounder to get Trey Lance, so trading Lance makes absolutely zero sense, especially cap wise.

The 49ers also aren’t known for eating salary cap room, yes they did it with Nate Sudfeld, but in the long run, the team doesn’t make a move where it will cost them salary cap room.

The other thing to note is the fact that the media has been wrong when it comes to the 49ers quarterback situation each time, whether it was Aaron Rodgers becoming a 49er, which isn’t financially feasible, to Tom Brady signing with the 49ers, and now trading Lance, so don’t believe what’s put out there, none of it makes any sense, as this is the season of people putting out false rumors, or rumors with no validity to them.

So, I’d be very shocked if the 49ers move Lance, not just before June 1, but at all, seeing as they gave up a ton of draft capital to get him.

With that said, thanks for reading, and follow me on Twitter @49erscap.
