An updated look at the 49ers 2022 salary cap situation with week 15 right around the corner

With week 14 behind us, and the week 15 right around the corner, well tonight, as the 49ers visit the Seahawks on TNF, I think it’s time to take another deep look into the 49ers current 2022 salary cap situation as it stands today.

Right now, the 49ers have 79 players signed, accounting for $185,072,678, with $22,190,004 in dead money, for a total commitment of $207,262,682, leaving them $6,111,479 under their 2022 adjusted cap of $213,374,161.

Below is the 49ers current roster.

Now, let’s look at what the team needs in cap room for potential per game roster bonus paybacks.

The 49ers will get back the following amount from players not attaining their per game roster bonuses counting against the cap.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo – $88,235

FB Kyle Juszczyk – $23,529

WR Deebo Samuel – $88,235

LT Trent Williams – $44,118

DE Samson Ebukam – $58,824

DT Arik Armstead – $352,941

NT Hassan Ridgeway – $100,000

WLB Dre Greenlaw – $29,412

CB Emmanuel Moseley – $176,471

FS Jimmie Ward – $117,647

That’s a total of $1,079,412.

Now let’s look at what players have LTBE incentives for 2022.

QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $5.65 million, consisting of 15 games of the $250,000 incentive for 25% or more playtime in any game, 9 of the $100,000 for each game he won while playing 25% or more, $500,000 for 1 playoff game with 50% of more, & $500,000 for 50% or more playtime in the conference championship game, but with the season-ending foot injury, he will only earn $3.2 million of it, while getting back $2.45 million in adjustments/credits in 2023.

WR Deebo Samuel- $150,000 for having 3 or more rush touchdowns in 2021, which he achieved in this past Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.

TE Ross Dwelley- $152,500 for playtime, yards, touchdowns, & club achievement.

Next, let’s look at what players have incentives that are considered NLTBE.

WR Deebo Samuel- $500,000 for 480 or more rush yards, and he has $150,000 already counting, so he can only earn $500,000, as the max value of the incentives are $650,000 per year.

WR Ray-Ray McCloud III- $700,000, breaks downs as $500,000 for 46% playtime, 40 catches, 400 receiving yards, 200 rush yards, & $200,000 for Pro Bowl selection.

C Jake Brendel – $152,500 for 50% Playtime, which he should achieve.

DE Samson Ebukam- $500,000 for sacks, & Pro Bowl selection.

DE Kerry Hyder Jr.- $750,000 for sacks.

DE Jordan Willis- $77,500 for 4 sacks.

NT Hassan Ridgeway- $700,000 for playtime, & sacks.

CB Charvarius Ward- $500,000 for Pro Bowl and/or 1^st or 2^nd team All-Pro selection

SS George Odum- $1.5 million, but these are unknown, most likely for playtime, tackles, interceptions, and Pro Bowl selection.

Next, let’s look at what kind of adjustments/credits the 49ers can get back in 2023.

First off, the 49ers have a projected $8,695,430 in cap room, but that’s with just 33 players signed, so when they have enough players signed to get to the top 51 rule, they’d be $4,804,570 over the cap, so any amount will help greatly.

Before I go over what the 49ers can get back in 2023, let’s look at the 30 players signed for 2023, with their cap number.

Now, let’s look at what the 49ers can get back in 2023.

First up are the veterans.

QB Nate Sudfeld- $1.035 million out of $2 million that he was guaranteed when he signed with the 49ers in the offseason, so they’ll eat $965,000.

WR Malik Turner- $300,000, as Turner’s practice squad salary is $358,200, but this is depended on him staying on the Raiders practice squad, or their 53-man roster.

WR Marcus Johnson- $250,000, as Johnson was signed by the Giants to their 53-man roster, so if he stays on their 53-man roster, they’ll get that back as well.

DE Kemoko Turay- $751,900, this depends on Turay staying on the 49ers practice squad, and not getting either a promotion to the 53, or another teams’ 53.

CB Dontae Johnson- $447,667, as he is on the 49ers’ practice squad, and has been elevated the max of 3 times, so they will get back most of the $560,000 they gave him this past offseason.

That’s a total of $2,784,567.

Next are UDFAs that were given guarantees in their base salaries.

WR Tay Martin- $45,000

RG Jason Poe- $65,000

SLB Marcelino McCrary-Ball- $100,000

CB Qwuantrezz Knight- $25,000

FS Tayler Hawkins- $50,000

All of these players are on the 49ers practice squad, so if they stick, the 49ers should get back a total of $285,000.

They also gave out the following to players not on their, or another teams’ practice squad.

C Dohnovan West- $100,000

DT Kevin Atkins- $10,000

MLB Jeremiah Gemmel- $70,000

That’s a total of $180,000, but right now they wouldn’t get back any of it since none are signed to a practice squad.

Also, I must note that both Leon O’Neal Jr., & Sam Schlueter got guarantees, but because they were waived off of injured reserve with an injury settlement, the 49ers won’t get those back per the CBA.

So, the 49ers should get back as much as $6,402,361 in 2023, which would put the team around $15.141 million in cap room to begin the 2023 offseason, but with just 33 players signed, with 51 signed they’d be around $1.641 million under a projected $225 million cap.

Now, the 49ers will need salary cap room to sign their own free agents, or bring in any outside free agents, and sign their draft picks, so they’d have to do some restructuring, with the candidates below, with cap savings.

RB Christian McCaffrey – $8.576 million max, $7,146,666 minimum

TE George Kittle – $8.456 million max, $7,927,500 minimum

LT Trent Williams – $14.588 million max, $13,676,250 minimum

DT Arik Armstead – $11.78 million max, $11,043,750 minimum

MLB Fred Warner – $9.476 million max, $8,883,750 minimum

Now, let’s look at the teams’ pending free agents.

Now, if the salary cap does come in at $225 million, the RFA tenders would look something like this, courtesy/credit to OverTheCap.com.

1^st-Round Tender: $6.011 million

2^nd-Round Tender: $4.308 million

Original Round Tender: $2.745 million

Right of First Refusal Tender: $2.629 million

If the 49ers want to tender Kevin Givens, who’s been having a good year thus far, they’d either do the ROFR, which is $2.629 million, or the 2^nd-round tender, which is $4.308 million.

I expect them to tender Colton McKivitz, which would be the original round tender of $2.745 million, and as for Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, if they let Azeez Al-Shaair walk, they may tender him, but no higher than the ROFR tender of $2.629 million.

As for the teams’ ERFAs, both(Jauan Jennings, & Curtis Robinson) would require the $940,000 tender.

Of the teams’ UFAs, the ones I’d consider bringing back if I’m the 49ers are center Jake Brendel, defensive ends Samson Ebukam, Kerry Hyder Jr., & Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle T.Y. McGill Jr., nose tackle Hassan Ridgeway, strongside linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, & free safety Tashaun Gipson Sr.

I wouldn’t expect these players, outside of Ebukam, Al-Shaair, & Moseley to cost more than a few million a year, some like Brendel, Hyder, & Gipson in the veteran minimum range.

I haven’t listed Mike McGlinchey, Jason Verrett, or Jimmie Ward for different reasons.

McGlinchey will likely end up costing more than the 49ers would like to pay him, ala Laken Tomlinson, & D.J. Jones.

If we also add in projected draft pick cap numbers, which I posted earlier this week, the 49ers would have a rookie pool of $6,781,924, but only the first 2 picks would count in the offseason, due to the top 51 rule.

If we add in those picks in, plus the 5 tenders, the 49ers would be $8,049,729 over the cap with 46 players signed, with 51 signed they’d be $11,799,729 over, but this doesn’t include credits, with the credits they’d be $1,646,846 over with 46 players signed, or $5,396,846 over with 51 signed, so they’ll need to restructure some players contracts, with the most likely ones being McCaffrey, & Warner, which would save a max of $18.052 million, which would give the 49ers $12.655 million to spend on their own players, or to replace players who leave, but this doesn’t take into account Nick Bosa’s pending extension, which should save some money.
