With the NFL season now 5 weeks deep, I thought I’d look at what pending free agents the 49ers would be able to retain, and those that will won’t be able to keep.
Now, let’s look at the teams’ pending free agents.
UFA:
RB Jeff Wilson Jr.
RB Marlon Mack
TE Ross Dwelley
TE Tyler Kroft
TE Jordan Matthews
C Jake Brendel
C Daniel Brunskill
RT Mike McGlinchey
DE Jordan Willis
DE Samson Ebukam
DE Kerry Hyder Jr.
DE Charles Omenihu
DE Kemoko Turay
DT Maurice Hurst Jr.
NT Hassan Ridgeway
SLB Azeez Al-Shaair
CB Emmanuel Moseley
CB Jason Verrett
FS Jimmie Ward
FS Tashaun Gipson Sr.
FS Tarvarius Moore
PK Robbie Gould
LS Taybor Pepper
RFA:
LT Colton McKivitz
DT Kevin Givens
SLB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
ERFA:
WR Jauan Jennings
RG Blake Hance
WLB Curtis Robinson
The 49ers have several free agents who could be described as bigger named players, no there isn’t a Trent Williams, or a Fred Warner, but there still are a good number amount of named players set to be free agents.
Let’s look at the 49ers’ bigger free agents first.
RT Mike McGlinchey – A player that has improved this season, McGlinchey is a guy the 49ers would like to keep, but likely won’t be able to, as they’re already paying Trent Williams $23.01 million a year, and McGlinchey will command in the $15 million a year, or more, with guarantees in the $25 million to $30 million.
Verdict: Unlikely to be retained
DE Samson Ebukam – Another player who has improved over last season, Ebukam is a guy I can see the 49ers bringing back, on a longer deal, somewhere in the $10 million to $13 million a year range, with guarantees in the $20 million range.
Verdict: Can be kept long term
SLB Azeez Al-Shaair – Al-Shaair filled in nicely last year for the injured Dre Greenlaw, who received a nice extension this season, but it seems that the 49ers have chosen Greenlaw over Al-Shaair, as I don’t think or see the 49ers paying 3 linebackers the type of money all 3 deserve.
Verdict: Unlikely to return
CB Emmanuel Moseley – Moseley has improved each year, and now that the 49ers have Charvarius Ward, they’d be wise to re-sign Moseley, as both Ward, & Moseley have been shutdown corners so far this season, and I think Moseley can fetch someone in the $13 million a year range, just below Ward’s $13.5 million a year, with guarantees in the $25 million range.
Verdict: Can be kept long term
FS Jimmie Ward – Ward is already set to count $6.395 million against the 49ers salary cap in 2023, but that’s in dead money, as his deal voids after the 2022 season, so the 49ers would be wise, if they choose to keep him, to get Ward signed before it voids, so they don’t basically have Ward counting twice against the cap, but his price tag could come in around $11 million to $13 million a year, with guarantees in the $24 million range.
Verdict: 50/50, they can keep him if signed before his deal voids, unlikely if the deal voids
Now when it comes to the teams’ lower end players, I think there’s no reason why they can bring back the likes of running back Jeff Wilson Jr., center Jake Brendel, right guard Daniel Brunskill, defensive ends Charles Omenihu, & Kerry Hyder Jr., nose tackle Hassan Ridgeway, cornerback Jason Verrett, free safety Tashaun Gipson Sr., & long snapper Taybor Pepper, all to deals that are either 1-year veteran minimum deals, or 1-3 year deals on lower end money.
The 49ers don’t have worry about their RFAs & ERFAs, as they’ll either tender them, or re-sign them to 1-year deals worth less than their tenders, that is for the RFAs.
The one player I didn’t mention that I would love back is Robbie Gould, as we don’t know if the 49ers want to re-sign him, or if Gould wants to continue his career, he may want to go back to Chicago, or retire all together.
