With week 1 behind us, and week 2 right around the corner, I think it’s time to take another deep look into the 49ers current 2022 salary cap situation as it stands today.
Right now, the 49ers have 78 players signed, accounting for $191,747,385, with $18,194,952 in dead money, for a total commitment of $209,942,337, leaving them $2,999,477 under their 2022 adjusted cap of $212,941,814, and the 49ers could create more cap room later on down the road by restructuring Trent Williams, & Fred Warner’s deals, or extending the likes of Samson Ebukam, Emmanuel Moseley, & Jimmie Ward.
Below is the 49ers current roster.

Now, let’s look at what the team needs in cap room for potential per game roster bonus paybacks.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $58,824
TE George Kittle- $88,235
LT Trent Williams- $29,412
MLB Fred Warner- $29,412
CB Charvarius Ward- $80,000
CB Emmanuel Moseley- $176,471
That’s a total of $374,118, the 49ers would have needed to payback Jimmie Ward $29,412, but with him on injured reserve for at least 4 weeks, the 49ers should get back at least 3 weeks as a credit in 2023, a total of $88,235.
Now let’s look at what players have LTBE incentives for 2022.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $5.65 million, consisting of 15 games of the $250,000 incentive for 25% or more playtime in any game, 9 of the $100,000 for each game he won while playing 25% or more, $500,000 for 1 playoff game with 50% of more, & $500,000 for 50% or more playtime in the conference championship game.
WR Deebo Samuel- $150,000 for having 3 or more rush touchdowns in 2021.
TE Ross Dwelley- $152,500 for playtime, yards, touchdowns, & club achievement.
Next, let’s look at what players have incentives that are considered NLTBE.
QB Jimmy Garoppolo- $2.8 million, this consists of the other 2 games playing $25% or more for $250,000 each, 8 games of the $100,000 for wins in those games he plays 25% or more, $500,000 for winning the conference championship, & $1 million for playing 50% or more in the Super Bowl.
RB Jeff Wilson Jr.- $950,000, this is for playtime, rush yards, catches, & touchdowns
WR Deebo Samuel- $500,000 for 480 or more rush yards, and he has $150,000 already counting, so he can only earn $500,000, as the max value of the incentives are $650,000 per year.
WR Ray-Ray McCloud III- $700,000, breaks downs as $500,000 for 46% playtime, 40 catches, 400 receiving yards, 200 rush yards, & $200,000 for Pro Bowl selection.
DE Samson Ebukam- $500,000 for sacks, & Pro Bowl selection.
DE Kerry Hyder Jr.- $750,000 for sacks.
DE Jordan Willis- $77,500 for 4 sacks.
NT Hassan Ridgeway- $700,000 for playtime, & sacks.
CB Charvarius Ward- $500,000 for Pro Bowl and/or 1st or 2nd team All-Pro selection
CB Jason Verrett- $152,500 for 55% playtime
SS George Odum- $1.5 million, but these are unknown, most likely for playtime, tackles, interceptions, and Pro Bowl selection.
Next, let’s look at what kind of adjustments/credits the 49ers can get back in 2023.
First off, the 49ers have a projected $28,701,413 in cap room, but that’s with just 30 players signed, so when they have enough players signed to get to the top 51 rule, they’d have $12,951,413, so any amount will help greatly.
Before I go over what the 49ers can get back in 2023, let’s look at the 30 players signed for 2023, with their cap number.
- LT 71 Trent Williams(2026)- $26,270,000
- DT 91 Arik Armstead(2024)- $24,346,000
- MLB 54 Fred Warner(2026)- $18,525,000
- TE 85 George Kittle(2025)- $18,092,575
- DE 97 Nick Bosa(2023)- $17,869,000
- CB 7 Charvarius Ward(2024)- $16,405,000
- QB 5 Trey Lance(2024)- $9,301,434
- WR 19 Deebo Samuel(2025)- $8,860,000
- FB 44 Kyle Juszcyzk(2025)- $6,588,750
- NT 99 Javon Kinlaw(2023)- $4,928,223
- WR 11 Brandon Aiyuk(2023)- $3,987,248
- MLB 48 Oren Burks(2023)- $2,773,000
- WR/KR/PR 3 Ray-Ray McCloud III(2023)- $2,090,000
- LG 65 Aaron Banks(2024)- $1,929,166
- SS 30 George Odum(2024)- $1,840,000
- DE 95 Drake Jackson(2025)- $1,339,180
- CB 20 Ambry Thomas(2024)- $1,305,232
- RB 32 Tyrion Davis-Price(2025)- $1,161,033
- WR 6 Danny Gray(2025)- $1,146,569
- TE 89 Charlie Woerner(2023)- $1,055,258
- RG 74 Spencer Burford(2025)- $1,038,014
- RT 76 Jaylon Moore(2024)- $1,020,759
- CB 38 Deommodore Lenoir(2024)- $1,011,217
- SS 29 Talanoa Hufanga(2024)- $1,000,038
- RB 25 Elijah Mitchell(2024)- $985,893
- CB 26 Samuel Womack III(2025)- $940,831
- LG/C 63 Nick Zakelj(2025)- $917,590
- NT 93 Kalia Davis(2025)- $903,003
- QB 13 Brock Purdy(2025)- $889,253
- RB 24 Jordan Mason(2024)- $873,333
Now, let’s look at what the 49ers can get back in 2023.
First up are the veterans.
QB Nate Sudfeld- $1.035 million out of $2 million that he was guaranteed when he signed with the 49ers in the offseason, so they’ll eat $965,000.
WR Malik Turner- $300,000, as Turner’s practice squad salary is $358,200, but this is depended on him staying on the practice squad, or another teams’ practice squad, or 53-man roster.
WR Marcus Johnson- $250,000, as Johnson was signed by the Giants to their practice squad, so if he stays on their practice squad, or another teams’ practice squad, or 53-man roster, they’ll get that back as well.
DE Kemoko Turay- $865,178, if Turay stays on the 53-man roster for the remainder of the 2022 season, or at least on the teams’ injured reserve list.
CB Dontae Johnson- $358,200, maybe more, as he could be activated up to 3 times, which would make it $471,000, or more if the team or another team signs him to their 53-man roster.
Next are UDFAs that were given guarantees in their base salaries.
WR Tay Martin- $45,000
RG Jason Poe- $65,000
SLB Marcelino McCrary-Ball- $100,000
CB Qwuantrezz Knight- $25,000
FS Tayler Hawkins- $50,000
All of these players are on the 49ers practice squad, so if they stick, the 49ers should get back a total of $285,000.
They also gave out the following to players not on their, or another teams’ practice squad.
C Dohnovan West- $100,000
DT Kevin Atkins- $10,000
MLB Jeremiah Gemmel- $70,000
That’s a total of $180,000, but right now they wouldn’t get back any of it since none are signed to a practice squad.
Also, I must note that both Leon O’Neal Jr., & Sam Schlueter got guarantees, but because they were waived off of injured reserve with an injury settlement, the 49ers won’t get those back per the CBA.
Also, the 49ers could get back Jimmy Garoppolo’s $5.65 million if he doesn’t play this season, and possibly Ross Dwelley’s $152,500, but I expect Deebo Samuel to have 3 or more rush TDs, so we won’t be getting the $150,000 back.
So, the 49ers could get back as much as $9,008,678 in 2023, which would give the team around $21.96 million in cap room to begin the 2023 offseason.
Finally, let’s look at the teams’ pending free agents.
