We all know that the 49ers will be letting go of Jimmy Garoppolo, which will save the team $24.055 million, but as you may have seen, the team will likely begin the 2022 season with around $16 million to $18 million, based on how the roster is structured, so the team might be wise to restructure the contract of Trent Williams, and I’ll tell everyone why they should.
If the 49ers were to restructure left tackle Trent Williams contract, they’d save $4.904 million in salary cap room, while only losing $1.226 million in cap room in 2023-2026.
Now, the reason why I believe it’d be wise to restructure Trent Williams’ deal is simple, in 2023 the 49ers currently are projected to have just $11.4 million to $11.7 million in salary cap room when they have 51 players signed, so the team could use every bit of extra cap room in 2023.
So, if the 49ers restructure Williams’ deal, they could carryover as much as $15 million to $17 million, depending on how the 2022 roster is constructed, and how the 2022 season goes as far as injuries, & roster moves.
To be able to carryover as much as $15 million to $17 million into 2023, that would give the 49ers between $26 million to $28 million in cap room, which would go a long way in retaining, and/or replacing potential free agents.
