UPDATED With Ray-Ray McCloud’s 2022 & 2023 cap numbers, & Jordan Willis’ 2022 cap number.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yesterday the 49ers re-signed running back Jeff Wilson Jr., defensive end Jordan Willis, & cornerback Dontae Johnson to 1-year deals, at least for Willis, & Johnson, Wilson is unknown, and I went over my locks for 2023<\/a>, so let\u2019s take an updated look at the 49ers current 2022 & 2023 salary cap outlook.<\/p>\n

As of now, 49ers have 64 players under contract or tendered, with a $216,102,220 in committed salaries for 64 players\u2019 contracts that we know, plus $5,167,726 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $221,269,946, while their top 51 rule comes up to $210,709,015, leaving the 49ers $1,815,546 under their 2022 adjusted cap, again before Dontae Johnson, as I mentioned.<\/p>\n

Below are the current 64 players signed or tendered, with their 2022 cap number.<\/p>\n

    Now, let\u2019s look at the 49ers 2023 salary cap situation.<\/p>\n

    The 49ers have 21 players signed for 2023, with those 21 players, the 49ers have a cap commitment of $150,131,200 for the 21 players\u2019 cap numbers we know, plus $14,939,999 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $165,071,199, leaving the 49ers $59,928,801 under the 2023 projected salary cap of $225 million, but that\u2019s with just 21 players signed, when you factor in enough players to get to 51, they\u2019d have $37,428,801 in cap room.<\/p>\n

    Now, let\u2019s take a look at the 21 players salary cap numbers for the 2023 season.<\/p>\n

      If we add in the teams\u2019 current 2022 draft picks, which would cost $9,428,256 combined, that would put the 49ers cap commitment, of $159,613,332, plus the aforementioned $14,939,999 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $174,553,331, which leaves the team $50,446,669 under a 2023 projected $225 million salary cap, but that\u2019s with the above 21 players, & 9 draft picks, & with enough players for 51, they\u2019d have $34,696,669 in cap room.<\/p>\n

      Of course, these numbers also don\u2019t include pending extensions for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, & defensive end Nick Bosa, which should come in at around $24 million a year for Deebo, & $32 million a year for Bosa, maybe a few million more, but they\u2019d likely have cap hits in the $10 million range for Deebo, & $16 million for Bosa.<\/p>\n

      So, if we factor in both of these projected cap numbers for 2023, the 49ers would have $185,613,332 in cap commitments for 32 potential players, plus the $14,939,999 dead money, for a total cap commitment of $200,553,331, giving them $24,446,669 in cap room on a $225 million cap, but again with just 32 players, so with enough players to get to 51, they\u2019d have $9,446,669.<\/p>\n

      While that $9.446 million isn\u2019t a lot, you must remember that it\u2019s a projection, Deebo Samuel, & Nick Bosa\u2019s 2023 cap numbers could come in lower, plus I\u2019d expect Alex Mack to retire, which saves the team $3.1 million, which would give them $27,546,669 before the top 51 rule, $12,546,669 after the top 51 rule.<\/p>\n

      So, as I\u2019ve said over the past couple of months, the 49ers will be able to extend not just Nick Bosa & Deebo Samuel this offseason, but also Brandon Aiyuk next offseason, while also having George Kittle, Trent Williams, Arik Armstead, Fred Warner, & Charvarius Ward signed to big money deals.<\/p>\n

      Now, the 49ers have several pending free agents after 2022, and they\u2019re listed below.<\/p>\n

      There aren\u2019t that many must re-signs, as it\u2019ll depend on how these players do this season, but ERFA Jauan Jennings is the one who will definitely be here in 2023, as his tender would be just $940,000, which would give the team $26,606,669 before the top 51 rule, $12,356,669 after the top 51 rule.<\/p>\n

      A player like Emmanuel Moseley, and Samson Ebukam could end up being re-signed, as they would be the teams\u2019 2 biggest UFAs, other than Jimmie Ward, who\u2019s set to count $6.395 million in 2023 in dead money, and if they extend him, they not only save $6.224 million in 2022, but they could get his 2023 cap hit to come in somewhere around that $6.395 million to $7 million.<\/p>\n

      I’d think the team would choose between Dre Greenlaw & Azeez Al-Shaair, and we could see Al-Shaair get a multi-year deal this offseason, since he was tendered at the 2nd-round level as a RFA, and Mike McGlinchey is the unknown, if he plays well, he likely ends up leaving.<\/p>\n

      Of the RFAs, I’d bet both Givens & McKivitz will be here in 2023, but those numbers, I don’t know what they’d get, Givens would likely get the right of first refusal tender, which is projected to be $2.629 million, while McKivitz would get the original round tender, which would be around $2.736 million.<\/p>\n

      If we add those two in, then their cap room be $18,141,669 for 35 players, with 51, it’d be $5,391,669, but this includes Alex Mack, so if we take him out, we save $3.1 million, leaving the cap room to $21,241,669 with the 35 players, & $8,391,669 with 51 players signed.<\/p>\n

      As for those who say that we should sign more big name players, we just can’t afford it, Jimmy Garoppolo is not stopping the 49ers from signing anyone, as the 49ers have other ways of making cap room, but those who said to do this, by restructuring deals, also seem to be the ones who are worried about the future cap, plus the 49ers can carryover whatever amount of the $25.55 million they’d save, to 2023.<\/p>\n

      So, it’s not smart to borrow from the future, as you’ll end up getting bitten in the ass, so to speak.<\/p>\n
