Others, including all-pro legend Joe Montana, said on The Ringer that he doesn’t think Trey is ready. Here are three reasons why 49ers quarterback Trey Lance needs to be in the driver’s seat. Before getting down to the nitty-gritty, let’s recap Trey Lance’s 2021 rookie season.

49ers quarterback Trey Lance made his debut appearance in week one versus the Detroit Lions, where he attempted one pass and had one completion for five yards and a touchdown to wide receiver Trent Sherfield. In week three versus the Green Bay Packers, Trey Lance rushed for his first rushing touchdown of the season and provided a spark to the San Francisco 49er’s offense. Trey Lance started the second half in week four against the Seattle Seahawks due to Jimmy Garoppolo. He went nine for eighteen with 157 yards and two touchdowns. In Trey’s first start against the Arizona Cardinals, he went 15-29, 192 yards, and one interception. Trey Lance was also a force on the ground in that game. He led the team in rushing on 16 carries for 89 yards.

The 49ers lost 10-17, but this was the moment of clarity that future quarterback Trey Lance was ready for the pro level. In week 17, Trey Lance started against the Houston Texans again due to Jimmy Garoppolo. He dropped back 26 times threw for 16 completions off of 23 attempts for 249 yards and two touchdowns. The only flaw was his interception in the game, but the 49ers went on to win 23-7, once again providing a spark for the 49ers. Some say that the 49er’s playoff chances remained alive because of this win. He finished the season with a 59.7 Pro Football Focus grade, 71 attempts, 41 completions, a 57.7 completion percentage, 603 yards, 8.5 yards per average, Five touchdowns, and two interceptions.

Reason number 1: Availability. So, what makes Trey Lance ready for the driver’s seat? Let’s start with the apparent reason. If quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is dealt or cut, who would be left on the roster to compete with Trey Lance? Could the 49ers bring back Nate Sudfeld to back up Trey Lance, or with Assistant Head Coach Anthony Lynn, spice up the quarterback’s room by adding veteran depth and competition with a quarterback like Tyrod Taylor. Either way, Trey Lance should and would be ahead of any quarterback in the room. Trey being available and the number 1 option makes it hard not to go with him at the beginning of the 2022 season.

Reason number 2: Trey’s progression. If we compare his only two starts against the Arizona Cardinals and the Houston Texans, they are like night and day. Although he attempted 29 passes against the Cardinals, it was more run-focused. Some may argue that the outcome could have been different had Trey Lance gotten into the endzone on that run stuff at the goal line. In a 49ers presser, Trey Lance felt that they would have won that game if he scored on that possession. Against the Texans, Trey Lance looked more confident and poised in the pocket. Kyle planned to get the run game going without Trey Lance. Trey Lance attempted 23 passes and completed 16 of them for 249 yards. He had a few bad throws, but he could spread the ball around to eight different pass catchers. This proves that he could scan the field and hit his targets. Unfortunately, his playing time ended after helping the 49ers keep their playoff dreams alive.

Reason number 3: Endorsements. Trey Lance is starting to receive endorsements from his fellow teammates such as wide receiver Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Trent Williams, and Kyle Juszczyk, to name a few. Even coach Shanahan and general manager John Lynch lit up at the podium when asked about Trey Lance during the team’s exit pressers. It seems as if they’re excited to see what Trey Lance will become, and the world has no idea what they’re about to witness.

It appears that the team fully will support Trey in his transition to becoming the starting quarterback for the 49ers. If Trey continues to practice hard, study, and progress, Kyle Shanahan’s first-round pick in the 2021 draft will look like a genius pick. Will Kyle Shanahan relinquish the keys to Trey Lance? Let us all hope that he does. Trey’s confidence and quick ability to learn from his mistakes show that he’s ready. It’s time for Trey Lance to be in the Driver’s Seat.

WayneBreezie
Writer
49ers Content Creator
Host of Nitty Gritty Niners Talk
Follow @waynebreezie via Twitter/Insta/LinkedIn/Facebook
Subscribe on youtube https://www.youtube.com/waynebreezie

[5,110
82,21,16,22,69,19,18,74
post-7303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analysis","category-player","tag-49erfaithful","tag-49ers","tag-49erscap","tag-9ers","tag-fttb","tag-ninersnation","tag-sanfrancisco49ers","tag-treylance
["GET
