With the 49ers locking up All-Pro middle linebacker Fred Warner to a 5-year extension, worth a bit over $95 million, the 49ers can now sit back, and relax, until 2022 that is, when Nick Bosa is eligible for an extension, so let\u2019s take a look at a potential Bosa extension again.<\/p>\n
First off, the way the 49ers got the Warner deal done was something I thought could be possible, but didn\u2019t think it would happen, because George Kittle\u2019s extension took up 2020 cap room, while Warner\u2019s extension didn\u2019t take up any 2021 cap room, due to the team lowering his base salary, and using the difference as his prorated part of his signing bonus.<\/p>\n
So, with that said, this, in my opinion, is a way the 49ers should, and very well could get a extension done for Bosa in 2022.<\/p>\n
Bosa, as of now, will have a $10,805,564 cap number in 2022, but he\u2019s only going to make the league minimum of $895,000 in 2022, so there isn\u2019t anyway of lowering his base salary, but he is due a $4,305,225 training camp roster bonus, which, theoretically, could use as part of his signing bonus.<\/p>\n
If the 49ers did turn his roster bonus into a signing bonus, let\u2019s say a $30 million signing bonus, which would prorate at $6 million a year, which means the 49ers would only have to use $1,694,775 in 2022 cap room to get Bosa locked up to a new deal, that would likely average around $30 million a year, while his 2022 cap number would go from $10,805,564 to $12,500,339.<\/p>\n
And as it stands, the 49ers will be $7,716,827 over the 2022 cap, that is if the cap does hit the $208.2 million ceiling, these include the potential base salary escalations for Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, & Mitch Wishnowsky.<\/p>\n
But we all know Jimmy Garoppolo won\u2019t be with the team in 2022, which would free up $24.895 million, after factoring in the top 51 rule, which would give the team $17,178,173 in cap room, and with the Bosa extension, they\u2019d be $15,483,398 under the 2022 cap, which should be enough to bring back their key free agents that they deem part of their core.<\/p>\n
