2023 salary cap situations, post cuts

With the 49ers set to open their season a week from tomorrow in Chicago, I think it’s time to take a quick look at the 49ers current 2022 & 2023 salary cap situations.

Right now, the 49ers have 73 players signed for 2022, & once they add 3 more players to their practice squad, they’ll be sitting at $4,789,854 in cap room for 2022, while they have other ways of adding cap room, whether they restructure the likes of Trent Williams($4.904 million saved), or Fred Warner($1,223,200 saved), or if they extend someone like a Jimmie Ward($6.224 million saved), the team will have cap room for the season, and hopefully to carryover into 2023.

Now, when it comes to 2023, the 49ers have 30 players signed, accounting for $179,212,599, along with $17,085,988 in dead money, for a total cap commitment of $196,298,587, leaving them $28,701,413 under a projected $225 million salary cap, but with just 30 players signed, so when they have 51 signed, they’ll be down to just $12,951,413, but don’t worry, because they’ll have a good amount of credits/adjustments, and I’ll explain below.

If Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t play a down, the 49ers will get back the $5.65 million in incentives that count against the 2022 cap, plus they’ll be getting back around $1 million from Nate Sudfeld, as well as some good amount from Malik Turner, Kemoko Turay, & Dontae Johnson, as well as money from their UDFAs that were guaranteed part of their base salary, all in all, they could be looking at well into the $7 million range, which would put their projected cap room in the $20 million range, which should be enough to bring back the likes of Emmanuel Moseley Jimmie Ward, and 1 of Dre Greenlaw, or Azeez Al-Shaair.

Of course, we might see some extensions before or in season, as GM John Lynch mentioned that they’re talking to a few players about extensions, but no names were mentioned.

So, rest assure, the 49ers are in a great place cap wise for 2023, and beyond, expect them to bring back their own, and/or add to the current roster in 2023.

As the season goes along, I will go even deeper in to the 49ers 2023 salary cap situation, so check back later on in the season.

As always, thank you for reading, you can follow me on twitter @49erscap for more salary cap information &
